The Reconstruction of Iraq?

Post by Trytostaydead »

I've been reading the news for sometime now, and I always see articles regarding how many U.S. soldiers were wounded or killed, whether there was a riot, the jobless, oil, Congress trying to cut the budget for Iraq.. etc, etc.. but I don't see much about the actual reconstruction.

Maybe they're just hard to find?

What has the U.S. set up in Iraq to provide for basic necessities to the people? How about jobs? Basic democracy as promised? Various other infrastructures?

As I said, maybe these articles are just hard to find underneath the sensationalism of slain U.S. servicemen?

I understand that the our forces are still under attack, but how are they going to win over the hearts and minds of the people if they see no change from one regime to the next?

AP Story grabbed from first source it came up in on Google.

At least in Baghdad at any rate the situation has improved markedly, and certainly that is also the case in the British sector. It's probably better than it was before the war for a few people in tribal regions who are getting clean water trucked to them on a regular basis--Saddam just didn't care.

Reconstruction projects make the news now and then, but really, which makes the better story, a town of ten thousand people .25% of America has heard off has had power restored or two American soldiers are dead with a burning truck to film?

The above site has quite a bit of information, both good and bad on what's going on in Iraq, and elsewhere. There is quite a bit that has been improved. The problem is that the entire Iraqi infrastructure has been broken from so long that it will take time to fix.

http://frontlinevoices.org/ was created to provide letters from US troops overseas.

Here's a report on a US judge who went to Iraq to help rebuild the irai judicial system.
