OTTAWA (CP) - The leaders of the Canadian Alliance and the Conservatives signed a merger deal Thursday that would see the two parties folded into a single entity in time for an anticipated spring election.

"The result is not only an agreement in principle, it is a principled agreement," Tory Leader Peter MacKay said in a statement.

The deal is "the union of our parties and the reunion of conservatives across Canada," the statement said.

Alliance Leader Stephen Harper called the agreement historic.

Finally, after many years of being split apart the two main Conservative parties are working together instead against each other to bring the ideals of principled conservatism to canada as they do with the Republicans here in the USA and the Tories across the pond in the UK.
