Car explodes near Moscow's Red Square, at least five people are hurt or killed

MOSCOW (AP) -- A car exploded near Moscow's Red Square on Tuesday, and at least five people were hurt or killed, Russian news agencies reported.

The blast occurred on the capital's main shopping street, Tverskaya, near the National Hotel, the news agency said. It said five people had "suffered."

There was no immediate information about the cause of the explosion, the Interfax news agency said. However, Russians have been jittery about terrorist acts since a series of explosions in Moscow and the south blamed on Chechen rebels.

Forty-four people were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a train in southern Russia last week.

Russia is suddenly taking the brunt of many suicide and car bombs, it seems to be the Nation of the Week for standard terrorist activity.

Considering what the first round of Chechen terrorism did (apartment building leveling truck bombs and hospitals held hostage) this isn’t very bad. Its also a sign of just how utterly Chechen forces in the field have been crushed.

Russian news say it wasn't a car, but a female suicide bomber. Apparently, she came to the car to ask directions to the Duma (one block down), when the bomb went off.

How can these terrorists be so inept? IIRC from where the explosion happened (I was there about a month ago) to the Duma is literally "hundred yards down the hill, on your left, can't miss it." How can they get themselves into the centre of Moscow, with bomb, and yet not be able to find the target? Bizarre.

holy fuck! it's a damn good thing that the bomb went off there and not at the Duma. It would have killed so many more...and I'd imagine the Russian response would have been earth shattering.
