A Baghdad Thanksgiving's Lingering Aftertaste

On a side note, how does one dress links?

Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

"magine their dismay when they walked 15 minutes to the Bob Hope Dining Facility, only to find that they were turned away from their evening meal because they were in the wrong unit. . . .

Bullshit. What the hell does you individual unit have to do with your individual feelings on the war.

Your political beliefs are not dictated by your Company nor Regiment. This article is horseshit.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The concept of the 'politically reliable' unit isn't new- for example, the views of certain officers, or the statements by several soldiers in one unit, may be viewed as enough to censure the unit from participation in El Shrubo's fake little Turkey escapade (from his bullshit about being spotted by a British Airways plane to the inedible turkey he was carrying around being photographed with, to the several minutes he really spent with the soldiers rather than the 2 hours commonly reported).

Or the people who decided to do this didn't give a shit. I find that much more likely than calling Stars & Stripies a pack of liars.

 You can stack the leadership, but the rank and file are beyond the capcity of fixing. Granted, the news media can pick and choose who to display, but the idea of a 'politicaly correct unit' in the US armed forces is rediculous.

Alright, I'm confused (never mind the bottle of rum that is empty behind me). The people who decided to do what? I might agree with you, if I knew what you're saying.

I said 'politically reliable'- e.g. units with leadership that are palatable to whoever was in charge (be that the DoD or whoever), and/or units with high morale overall. It's no secret that morale in various units in Iraq has been getting quite low. You want happy, content soldiers for your photo-op, not unhappy ones.

The people who barred certain men from certain units from the event.

Granted. But in the type of news coverage given to the event, such stacking would be useless. It was the rank in file that was shown at the Thanksgiving dinner. If they interviewed the officers of the unit, I'd see your point, but it was the 'troops' that were shown.

Hmmm. You might have a point if they excluded cetain people with vastly different positions than the others. Interesting.

You're shitting on Bush because he didn't want to appear with people that would decry him on TV? Wow, what a fucking brilliant statement. Of course they wouldn't let soldiers that had serious problems with Bush in; everyone does it.

I don't see why everybody is so emotional about a nice but unsubstantive gesture.

The devil? For that? I wouldn't think so. But I think it quite reasonable that an opposing party attack a politician for something nobody likes politicians doing, whether or not it's typical, lawful, and helpful to the campaign. Well, at least, I don't have the highest opinion of it.
