Deseased Cow came from Canada

Post by Alex Moon »

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Holstein infected with mad cow disease in Washington state was imported into the United States from Canada about two years ago, federal investigators tentatively concluded Saturday.

Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief veterinarian for the Agriculture Department, said Canadian officials have provided records that indicate the animal was one of a herd of 74 cattle that were shipped from Alberta, Canada, into this country at Eastport, Idaho.

"These animals were all dairy cattle and entered the U.S. only about two or two-and-a-half years ago, so most of them are still likely alive," DeHaven said.

He emphasized that just because the sick cow was a member of that herd, it does not mean that all 74 animals are infected.

Based on the Canadian records, the cow was 6.5-years-old -- older than U.S. officials had thought, DeHaven said. U.S. papers on the cow said she was 4- or 4.5-years-old.

The age is significant because the United States and Canada have banned feed that could be the source of infection since 1997.
Well, this isn't suprising, and really is good news, IMHO.

That was fast.....it took us months to find that the cow we had came from the US,but in a few days the US Agricultural Department has determined that the cow they have came from here.

Lets play another round of "Blame Canada" for everything

It's possible, but an awful lot of "tentative conclusions" from the US lately have blamed Canada (9/11, the big 2003 blackout, etc), only to be proven wrong later. It does look like one of those knee-jerk reactions, but we'll see.

So? There were probably papers from it's sale, and with the threat of Mad Cow they would have hurried to find out where the cow came from.

How is this "playing 'Blame Canada'"? Mad Cow coming into the US was likely to come from Canada, so it isn't suprising. It looks as if there was a screw up with the papers, either intentional or accidental, that helped get this cow over the border and that is as likely to have occured on the US side as on the Canadian side. The reason that this is good news is that it hopefully means that this was an isolated incident; that they can trace the rest of the herd and stop any outbreak from occuring, and that this will help calm fears about US feed practices.

Casus belli! Invade Canada, make our land area greater than Rusland! And if this is infact true not only I get cheap beef for a few weeks, but no miniscule threat of death.

Well like Mike pointed the 9/11 attack, the blackout a few months back and now this single cow,it won`t be long before you hear some dipshits say something against Canada. :?

Wow, twice in three years before this  And if we worry about what the dipshits think, then we're in trouble. Nothing revealed so far shows anything that could be construed as to be the direct fault of Canada's policies. More likely, if it's true that the cow came from Canada, then it's going to be shown to be the fault of a couple of farmers who either falsified records or simply screwed them up, nothing more.

Just heard this, one French-Canadian media here is speculating that this "it came from Canada story" may cause another ban on Canadian beef. :?

BSE has been known to arise spontaneously, so unless somebody was paranoid enough to check all cows crossing any kind of border, there's actually very little to blame. It's like blaming a neighbouring country when a tornado formed in its domain which spread to your own and caused a lot of damage.

Utterly pointless.

They seem to be assuming that the cow must have had BSE when it came across the border. And the fact that they got the cow's age wrong by 2 years does not inspire a lot of confidence in the accuracy of these records which they're citing as hard evidence.

I see the current attitude here in the states is only getting worse. Sure, maybe Canada is at fault in some way but why does that matter? Our people still failed to catch.

The US really needs to move away from passing the blame. Lets try making people responsible for their own actions.

What pisses me off is that 102 pounds of this cow got shipped to Montana and the Feds refuse to disclose where this meat went.

So since this cow came from Canada, they assume it was infected when it came across? They're looking for someone to blame for their poor feed policies, and guess who ends up with it. Unless they can prove it was infected when sold, the fact that it came form Canada is a red herring.

His CD has entered Canada, and that's far too close for me. Besides, by simple volume America has more crappy singers running around than Canada does (though Avril Lavigne counts for ten).
