The Georgia House rejects an amendment banning gay marriage!

I'm absolutely shocked. I was sure this was going to pass.

Let me tell you, if an Amendment banning gay marriage can't make it through the Georgia legislature, it doesn't stand a chance at the national level.

This is some really great news. Really great.

It is just nice to see after all the hyperbole and vitriole, Congress won't unite behind it. In the states, even to the South, people are unsure.

There maybe hope for humanity.

I wonder how much of this opposition is coming from "Let's not discriminate against gay people," and how much is, "Let's not fuck with the Constitution over a trivial matter". Either way works for me, since I'm opposed to it on both grounds.

Um ... Georgia rejecting a ban on gay marriage does make me wonder what the Hell is going on. ;)

Just to be clear, gay marriage is currently not allowed in Georgia, so it's not like our politicians have suddenly become much more enlightened or anything like that. But the gay marriage ban isn't enshrined in the state Constitution (which is actually relatively free of bigotry compared to other southern state Constitutions, as far as I'm aware), and now it won't be.

I'm not suprised that Arlen Specter is copping out. He's so moderate a Republican that most Pennsylvannia Conservatives think he's a major RINO. He kind of would have to cop out, because I know that he'd never support it (unlike Rick Santorum, who'd make being gay illegal and carry a ten year sentence, if he could) but also not want to piss off Pennsylvannia republicans more than he already has.

Those are interesting results. Unfortunately, I can easily see 38 states voting for the amendment.
