The teenage pregnancy rate in America, which rose sharply between 1986 and 1991 to huge public alarm, has fallen steadily for a decade with little fanfare, to below any level previously recorded in the United States. And though pregnancy prevention efforts have long focused almost exclusively on girls, it is boys whose behavior shows the most startling changes.

More than half of all male high school students reported in 2001 that they were virgins, up from 39 percent in 1990. Among the sexually active, condom use has soared to 65 percent, and nearly 73 percent among black male students. The trends are similar, if less pronounced, for female students, who remain slightly less likely than boys to report that they have had sex. Nowhere are the changes more surprising than in poor minority neighborhoods in Harlem and the Bronx, which a decade ago were seen as centers of a national epidemic of teenage pregnancy.

But, but, but... how can this possibly be true?! We haven't put God back in the schools and stopped teaching Evil-ushion or the Antichrist idea that the Sun is the centre of the solar system. And we still have airwaves full of SMUT. And gays are MARRYING and it hasn't brought the Apocalypse upon us!

cos teens are just less likely to have sex these days, simple as that, unprotected sex is extremely uncommon too, nearly everyone carries condoms around in their wallets here in the ukl... its starting to turn... sex ed works

God's just waiting for the last episode of Friends to air before he lets loose with the Apocalypse. Come May 16(or whatever it might be), we're all fucked.

To the article, though, it's probably a combination of all the efforts. Sex-education probably...you know, educated people, and religious guilt probably scared other kids into abstinence.

Nah, I really don't mind. This is good news, and I've never really noticed a lot of sexual activity in my high school, which is partly because of where I live, and partly (I suppose) because of this trend.

kids are just more educated about that stuff since the fundy's * fundimental religious nuts* have lowered their guard and allowed us to become so...

Also I think alot of parents are bitching at their kids more to use protection and such because they dont want to be paying for their kids kid/kids.
