When people hear "sit-ups," they think of those pussy stomach-crunch things, not a genuine, fully-fledged sit-up where you can feel the fat burning off your torso. I did 50 of those on an incline at the gym this weekend and almost died. It's a lot different from doing it on a flat surface.
Situps aren't necessary to lose weight, and spot reduction doesn't really work. Overall body exercise will take the jelly rolls off.

but you dont have to go to a gym or pay money to do situps, hence the beauty.

You don't have to go to a gum or pay money to take walks either, and you will burn more calories with a long walk than you will with situps, because you burn out too quickly with situps.

Those inclines are funky. I did one that held your shins over the edge of the inclines so you effectively were crunching over a 135 degrees. Eighty of those are...interesting.

Crunches, sit-ups, and all stomach exercises are, like other low-rep workouts, really for building and toning muscle. If you have only minimal fat to begin with, doing them will bulk up your abs and create the impression of specific weight loss, but the only way to really do that is true aerobic and long-term exercise. Running is King.

Yeah, you're telling me. After 30 on that incline, I felt like I'd done 50 on the floor.

This whole thread reminds me of John Candy playing racquetball while smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer in the movie Splash. :)

If you want to make it harder even on a flat surface, then stick your knees in the air with your feet off the ground.

A traditional 'sit up' where you go from full horizontal to vertical is rubbish, as you're resting at both ends, and because you're braced against the floor, your hip flexors do a big part of the work.

To do it properly, get your feet off the floor, and stop yourself just before the vertical and horizontal, so that your abs are always supporting your weight.

Sit ups are, however, pretty poor for weight loss, as even beating the shit out of your abs doesn't burn that many calories. An all-over program will force your body to work to rebuild and repair the muscles you use (and damage) as you exercise, increasing your metabolic rate and causing more weight loss.
