And on MSNBC, Clinton is reported as having 249 total delegates as opposed to Obama's 128. McCain has a whopping 378 with Romney having 127.

For some perverse reason, all the star power arrayed behind Obama makes me want him to lose, even though Hilary is the inferior candidate.

According to the link Zed Snardbody provided, Hillary Clinton is at 534 delegates to Obama's 425 - a strong lead, but not overcomeable. I'm more concerned over the fact that he lost by serious margins in California, New York, and even Massachusetts (what the fuck good did Ted Kennedy's pledge provide again, other than another super-delegate?). In any case, all of us Obama supporters better be thanking Cthulu that the Democrats use a combination of proportional representation and district-by-district delegate distribution.

Not so much luck for the Republicans, especially poor Romney. Although I was expecting McCain to do well in general and Huckabee in the South, I had no idea they would in tandem fuck up Romney so badly. Romney's only 46 delegates ahead of Mike Huckabee's 105 right now - as compared to McCain's 475 (meaning that he's nearly halfway to the nomination). One amusing little tidbit - according to CNN, the largest single chunk of Romney's delegates (36) came from none other than - wait for it - Utah!

It'll be interesting to see the Republican punditry react to this loss, after all of their moaning, bitching, and last minute "Stop McCain!" attacks. Will they eat crow and back McCain, or continue to dig in their heels?

Dark Hellion wrote:Voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression are different things. One is simply the fact that American voting practices are not in synch with the way that the modern world works. The other is the strawman you are trying to impose. I mean, its not like voting should be made convenient for the huge portion of society that has families and works 9-5 jobs. That would just make it too easy. Because they can just fill out absentee ballets, just like if my house is burning, 911 doesn't need to respond to my call, I can get my phonebook and look up my local fire department. I mean, simplifying important social processes so they work with the greatest majority of the populace is no big deal.
You're arguing that holding an election on a Tuesday disproportionately disenfranchises certain segments of voters. Einhander is arguing that Tuesday elections are a form of voter suppression. Neither of you has offered a shred of evidence to support your position. So why don't we stop wasting time going back and forth and have you provide evidence supporting your position, hmm?

Letting you know now, I'm going to be fairly easy to convince on this one if you can prove your point; I agree with you that things could be made easier, but I see no reason to believe that the working poor (as opposed to anyone with an 8-5 job, kids, school, etc. - in other words, the majority of the voting populace) are disenfranchised - you're going to have to actually provide evidence for that.

And I'd love to see Einhander explain how holding elections on a weekday is a form of voter suppression - especially since everybody knows about it months (if not years) in advance and can easily vote absentee if they think they might have a problem making it to a booth.

Unless it's a winner take all state, then until all the votes are counted and the delegate count is set, we don't know who the hell is winning right now.

Another fucking presidential election for the Democrats to lose. Of course, in all fairness, Hillary Clinton is not John Kerry, who was prone to making all manner of idiotic mistakes (like going windsurfing against Edwards's advice under camera observation when you are being accused of "blowing with the political winds". ) but still came close before losing. I suppose if anyone could pull off a victory against the negatives she possesses against Media Darling McCain, it would be her.

It's definitely the Democrats' election to lose, so I will have little pity on them if they manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Why is Clinton seemingly so popular? I don't understand the appeal. It's a bit depressing.

She reminds people of the not-as-shitty days of the Clinton years and she's got the potential to be the first woman president. My only issues with her are her unreasonable and intellectually dishonest attacks on games and gamers, and the fact that she's a "centrist". Which in the rest of the world makes her right wing.

I'm not a huge fan of Obama, but with Edwards out of the race, he's the next best candidate for the nomination. He's not as big of a corporate whore as Clinton, basically.

Sanchez, while you have proven that alternative methods of voting do exist, you have in no way answered the main point that the timing of the election can create voting difficulties for many folks, difficulties that could easily be avoided through myriad manners other than resorting to absentee ballets. In fact, absentee ballets are a concession to the fact that the voting takes place on days that significant enough portions of the populace cannot vote that a wholly alternative method needs to be created.

I never get other American's blind adherence to the systems, as if they are immutably unflawed. Practicality has always seemed to me to be a much better American virtue than dogmatism, so why the fear of changing things to work better? Modern America is a sick joke of much of the stuff that made us the hegemon of the world, and frankly, I like living in the most powerful country in the world, and I don't want the rest of the shitheads in my country ruining that for me. Cuz if my country can't beat up your country, then I am stuck with a bunch of arrogant hicks for no reason.

As an extension of this, the Clintons are kind of an established brand name among devout Democrats. Hillary tends to draw heavy support among the Democratic base, as it were.

I think it is asians and hispanics.

Hispanics are Clinton's greatest backers. Many asians are racist and have many code words to name blacks. If you think the N word is bad for blacks you haven't heard the words asians use to label blacks. Hispanics want to back immigration reform. I would argue there's more of a chance of this than woman versus man -- this isn't the feminist movement of the 80's.

I will see if there's numbers to back up my hypothesis.
