Given today's state of journalism, the greater damage has already been done. Why do you keep trying to shift the conversation onto how bad the Clintons are? I can't help thinking that a big part of why Trump won is that Hillary's critics were so caught up in how bad the Clintons are (both real and imagined), and in stopping Hillary, that they basically became blind to the fact that Trump has all of Clinton's flaws dialled up to eleven, plus a whole bunch of his own.

Its a shitty situation all 'round, and if I'd had my way, Bernie Sanders would be our President-elect now. But if it were a Clinton vs. Trump choice now, I'd make the same one I did when I filled out my mail ballot in October.

But I do dispute the claim that I am safe simply because I'm in Canada. The actions of the US President have global consequences. I am better off than some. I am not immune. And I'm not just talking about doomsday scenarios like an American civil war or World War III. Climate change will fuck us all. An economic crash will fuck us all. The further legitimization of bigotry and undermining of democracy will fuck us all.

In the end, nobody is going to benefit from a Trump Presidency. Probably not even Trump himself.

I doubt TPP as it was would have passed Congress anyway- it had serious opposition on both the Left and Right.

And I rather suspect any advantages to getting rid of TPP for those countries will be more than balanced out by the effects of Climate Change, or as Herr Trump calls it, a Chinese hoax.

Edit: Oh, and a major war centred in that part of the world is a real possibility if Trump keeps clumsily provoking China.

Aside from all the screeching and dogpiling, I just wanted to say...

The thing with proportional EC voting, I find, is that it either has the same reliability or representation problems we have with the current system (especially since gerrymandering is still a thing), or it's basically just adding an extra unneeded layer of complexity to just having a straight popular vote. Plus, there's still the whole thing I've pointed out in the other thread that the EC rewards a lack of voter participation, which is a pretty critical flaw in an ostensibly democratic system.

Now that would be interesting: adjust the number of EC votes by the voter turn-out. If total registered voter turn-out for the state is 58%, the state only gets 58% of its Electoral votes this time around. If they bump-up voter turn-out, they can get to cast more. States never actually lose their Electoral votes, they just have to be "silent", like their voter base (or "no confidence" votes.) This would have to be widely accepted (like Amendment-level accepted), so every state is held to it. Each state would have to take voter roll maintenance seriously, and work against voter suppression, since it would cost the state Electoral College votes to keep opposition from voting.

Appealing to the middle would force extremists to the periphery, and get "loyal opposition" government back to work.

I like this idea very much and I think it's elegant.
