isn't that illegal? From what I read of the US Army chaplains system, unless you're a christian and seeking spiritual help, they can't push their faith on you. I'm sure the rules are lax enough that they get to use biblical proverbs and other stories but the behaviour you describe doesn't seem to be allowed. Much less what shit-head major here pulled.
They've been documented doing it. In fact there was, IIRC a lawsuit recently filed against a military hospital by a jewish officer who was denied kosher food and preached to by hospital staff and chaplains against his will while he was confined to a hospital bed
I had a similar, though much more harmless, thing happen to me while I was in the hospital for a month and a half back in 2005. Some asshole priest came into the room to council the patient I shared it with, but he was out getting tests. he started asking me about if I needed his services (I almost said something about not being 12 years old, but I digress) and I politely declined. He then started prodding a bit asking questions and I answered that I was an atheist and wasn't particularly interested in a discussion. He then really started pushing me to read his copy of the new testament, and I finally just told him to fuck off. At that point he murmered something about praying for me before leaving.
