Then I guess it was a usual toll booth, probably italian. It just looked kind of a huge post, but then we passed several similar ones later on the roads.

Must have been. Those things are everywhere in Italy. Italian's greed for toll money plus their usual disorganized way of doing things ensures that it's very easy to know when you're leaving Austria. The regret comes almost instantly.Stas Bush wrote:Then I guess it was a usual toll booth, probably italian. Yeah, it was kind of shocking. But then, italians also charge you 20 euros for swimming on a rather dirty sand beach for a few hours. Those things are everywhere in Italy

Because.... they constantly live in a state of paranoia perpetuated by our dear Govt?Xisiqomelir wrote:Isn't it better to ask why Singaporeans don't mind being saddled with an obtrusive, suffocating and offensive NRIC system?ray245 wrote:Wait...americans don't even bring their passport with them when they are overseas?

Americans also get far less paid vacation than most of their European counterparts, and generally only speak English.General Zod wrote:Most Americans have never been out of the US period. Partly due to how large the US on its own is, partly due to travel being expensive and partly due to most people not needing to leave the country.ray245 wrote: So does that means most americans has never been to countries outside north and south america?

And that means anything? It just means there's nothing to do in SIngapore, if you haven't yet noticed.ray245 wrote:Bah...at the least most singaporeans has travelled to more countries as compared to americans...you know...travelling to countries where you need a passport?

That said, I don't really find the NRIC system to be obtrusive, suffocating and offensive, but I don't feel oppressed enough to flee to a western liberal democracy, so maybe that's just me

Of course the USA spans 3,794,066 square miles, instead of Singapore's 272 square miles.ray245 wrote:Bah...at the least most singaporeans has travelled to more countries as compared to americans...you know...travelling to countries where you need a passport?
In other words, while I'd love to visit other countries, there are those pesky factors of cost, time, and distance that prevent me from doing so.
Now if I could visit Canada or Mexico after driving 200 miles, I'd do so.
However, my grandma in Edmonton is at least a week away if I drive.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

You do realise that, in M'sia and Singapore, the point of putting race and religion in the NRIC is to deliberately discriminate? You probably don't know public policy too much, but in Singapore, it is clear and present particularly in the SAF. I suppose it is all fine and well to be oppressed, and I do know of M'sian Chinese who do prefer to be anywhere but Malaysia for that sole reason of official discrimination.AniThyng wrote:Like what, JB?Big deal, that.
