You're assuming that I'm actually interested in population and population growth. Yes GDP is larger, but we're still still the Second City in terms of global relevance.

You should be happy enough China didn’t steamroll the place in 1951 as it absurdly easily could have. They sure wouldn’t have held back in 1997.

This brings up a thought of a smoky room full of Chinese leaders discussing the situation back in '51 and one of them going, "Meh, what's 45 years anyway?"

Well, you Chicago people don't have to worry about earthquakes.

But we still have nicer weather.

You also don't have to be neighbors to Orange County (for the disclaimer, Irvine, where I live right now, is in Orange county).
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

Yes, we do.

We had one earlier this year

Granted, it was pretty minor but the New Madrid quake in 1812 was as powerful as anything from California.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Aside from the population curiousities, I think the "purchasing power" bit may be off too, or only looking at certain things. I've had New Yorkers say that it was harder for them to make ends meet in LA than NY. While rents are somewhat cheaper here (generally), the wages tend to be disproportionally less, and a car (with the resulting gas, insurance, and payments) are far more necessary than in a more compact city like NY. Similar factors may apply to other cities listed as well.
