It did occur to me a bit after making the post that certain indicators of social progress, like the murder rate, have been improving for centuries. So we can't be doing that bad of a job.

Even when parents do a lot of things wrong, it is really important that the children know the parents care. My own father could be extremely harsh, mercurial, insulting, demanding, etc. In many ways, a lot of my parenting methods were chosen in order to not follow his example. But I knew that everything he did, he did because he thought it was best for us. In his own way, I know that he loved me and my brother, even if he didn't have the best way of showing it. That is enormously important, and I would argue that it outweighs a lot of other factors.
Yeah. Raising a kid is really hard work, but kids are also surprisingly resilient and can adjust very well to different circumstances (think about how many different cultures there are in which people of differing parenting abilities have successfully raised children). That's what makes cases like the one in the OP so shocking: somehow this animal of a mother managed to break even the kid's basic social development. Even the worst criminals and juvenile delinquents still know, on some level, how to interact with other people--the kid in the OP didn't even have that.

I've read many child abuse stories during my years here at SD.net, but this is the first one that drove me to tears.

It would be something of an understatement to say that the punishment here does not fit the crime.
Incarceration in the conditions this woman lives in, if they weren't of her own making, would be considered cruel and unusual punishment in the extreme.

You know, that's a good point, and it probably mitigates most of what makes me so upset.
