Of course there are no "true conservative" city politicians. American conservatism is a blood and soil ideology, and it abhors Babylon. Can anyone imagine a major beloved-of-Glenn-Beck conservative running a city? Other than running it into the ground?

Bullshit. It was clear you didn't think they deserved to be called conservatives. Any type of superficial distinction like you made is mostly utterly meaningless anyway; since what you described were "social" conservatives, which makes up the bulk of the Republican party.

I've noticed something similar here as well. City council is much more socialist than even our provincial government, and our federal government would be more conservative if they could get away with it (BC, Ontario, and Quebec are holding them back, I guess). But locally? Some of these guys are practically NDP, nevermind Liberal. I'd expect them to be more centrist, but they really are more left-wing. When one of my councillors retired, he was replaced by a former bus driver, Amarjeet Sohi, plus another ward got a Poli Sci grad from the U of A. Grumbling over "communists and socialists" taking over city council started immediately.

Brian Mason, leader of the provincial New Democrat Party, used to be a city councillor as well, and a bus driver before that. The bus drivers in general are much more socialist than a lot of other professions, I've noticed.

"Wiggle room"? What the fuck are you talking about? Your original statement clearly required that conservatives do not want to turn back the clock, and that is manifestly untrue. I hate this "real conservatives" bullshit; it reminds me of the "true Marxist paradise". The noble conservative is a fiction, just like the Marxist paradise. He has concocted an ideology full of high-minded principles about fairness and justice, but devoid of the quality of sympathy, and which just happens to benefit himself.
