It points to the increasing disconnect between the classes in this society which is an outgrowth of the GOP's effort to promote a plutocracy in this country.

I await your inevitable pettifoggery in reply.
And I assume that you will then be applying this logic and condemning the Democrats for having convention parties in the middle of two on going American wars? Because your tenuous chain of logic dictates that if something bad is happpening, clearly no party. But of course you can't have things like a consistent standard.
That's a funny way of attempting to recast a strawman.
There's no actual correlation between what the Republican Party is doing and what is actually being done about said hurricane. Frankly, most of what can be done already has in that the cities most in danger were evacuated instead of people hanging around with their thumbs up their asses. The problem with your logic is that everything that can be done, probably already is (or wouldn't be anyway).
Which isn't the point, but keep pretending you're actually arguing one instead of spewing reactionary bullshit.
Far be it for me to say but it seems like you're simply looking for something to be offended about with out worrying about any real logic or substance.

Ah, Republican politicians. They know how to stay classy!

Fred Thompson:
And we need a President who doesn't think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade.
Joe Lieberman, from prepared comments:
When others wanted to retreat in defeat from the field of battle, when Barack Obama was voting to cut off funding for our troops on the ground, John McCain had the courage to stand against the tide of public opinion and support the surge and because of that, today, our troops are at last beginning to come home, not in failure, but in honor!"
(Relevent: Joe had previously stated he would not attack Obama. 'I'm not gonna to go to that convention -- the Republican convention -- and spend my time attacking Barack Obama.')

George W. Bush, POTUS:
If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry Left never will.
Manic Progressive: A liberal who violently swings from anger at politicos to despondency over them.

You know, "the angry left" isn't a bad moniker. I mean, I'm mad as hell about what Bush and the Republicans have done to the country for the past eight years....

I thought Fred Thompson wasn't too bad. I hated what he was saying and disagreed with him wholeheartedly, but he delivered a good speech and hit the GOP themes pretty solidly. Much better than Lieberman, who is clearly a political whore whose prospects are diminishing by the day.

I keep expecting to see one of Laura Bush's eyes start to glow red and hear "must kill Sarah Connor" coming out of her mouth.

Lieberman appearing at the convention probably reminded the Democrats why they wanted to boot him out of the party.

Is Lieberman's district liberal or conservative? I sure wish he gets kicked out the next election.

He just survived a brutal senate re-election in Connecticut in 2006. CT is a fairly liberal state. He initially ran as a democrat, but became an independent when he lost the primary to Ned Lamont. The democrats were split pretty badly in the general election, and Lieberman beat Lamont 49%-39%. Lieberman probably would have lost if he wasn't such a well entrenched incumbent.

The fact that his district also includes Groton, where Electric Boat is located, and his bringing the pork home over the years, helped fortify that entrenchment.

So, tonight's speech from Palin is probably the most important convention speech since when? I can't remember a campaign that so completely hinged on the VP acceptance speech. I'm really getting a sense that if Palin doesn't score a lot of points tonight, the McCain campaign is history. Palin really has to define herself well tonight - otherwise, the democrats are going to be able to do that for her pretty much until the VP debates.

Tomorrow's headlines are really going to shape the next few weeks of the general election. A good speech tonight, and the conversation is going to be about how unfair the criticism against Palin has been, and how her firm convictions (or some crap to that effect) have helped her keep it together under the intense glare of the international media. That's a far more positive conversational starter for the McCain camp then the storylines that have been swirling around Palin since she was picked about her daughter, troopergate, and the vetting process.

On the flip side, if she flubs tonight, the current questions about her scandals and about her readiness will be the conversation starters and McCain's judgement will continually be brought to the forefront. That's far more perilous ground for the republicans and there's little that McCain can do to counter it, since he negated several of his key arguments against Obama's candidacy by selecting Mrs. Palin (notably the inexperience argument).

What do you think Palin has to do tonight to realistically be a success? As far as the republicans are concerned, she could practically perform fellatio on a dildo advertizing a 1-900 number and she'd still be called a success, but for undecided voters? I'm not sure.

All she has to do is read the speech that somebody else wrote for her. The real question is how good those speechwriters are.

That's what I mean. The media I think will label her a success no matter what she does, since they want to hype up the race and gawk about how close it is. I mean, she could probably drop her pants, take a steamer on the stage and walk off waving to the crowd pageant-style, and she'd still get lauded. While I hope that fecal oratory wouldn't get much national support, I've learned that it's a mistake to underestimate the level of stupidity in the average American voter.

Frankly it doesn't matter what Palin says tonight. She can probably sink the campaign singlehandedly if she blows the speech tonight or cries during a debate, but otherwise this is coming down to Obama vs. McCain, not Palin vs. Biden.

Head of Havard Law Review
Taught constitutional law
Directed various public programs

Abraham Lincoln's Experience:
Elected Captain of a militia company in the Black Hawk War (saw no action)
Taught himself Law
Became successful ambulant lawyer
8 Years Experience Illinois State House of Representatives
2 Years Experience US House of Representatives

Supporters of Obama need to bring this up more often, if Abraham Lincoln, possibly one of the greatest Americans ever, could get by on 10 years of government experience, I don't see why Obama couldn't.
With a 2000 census population of 653.6 thousand, Obama's state senate district had a larger population than the entire state of alaska at the same time, which was 626.9 thousand.

Just saw some of Mitt Romney's speech. It's amazing how the talking points haven't really changed in the last 20 years, all of the events during that period notwithstanding. Their arguments are simply immune to facts. And sadly, I imagine that they are still quite effective.

It takes either great gall or great stupidity to rant about the evils of "choking regulations" at a time when poorly regulated commodities and financial markets have run rampant and dragged the economy with them.

Hyuk-abee's on the podium. Just tied in the Gimp's POW experience with the idea of leaving Iraq later "with victory and honour".

Sadly they still play quite well with a lot of gullible Americans. Two of my right wing friends once sent me some screed by Thomas Sowell railing about the "dangers" of Barack Obama becoming president. Choc-a-block with all sorts of errors and fallacies. I sent it back thoroughly dissected. In reply, they expressed disappointment that I wasn't open to alternative ideas, then gave the party line about Obama's threatened choking regulations and high taxes and how grateful they were for the Bush tax cuts that gave them their chance to start their own business. Nevermind the fact that the deficits created by Wonder Chimp and a six-year GOP congress will make credit so tight that they'll find it very difficult to get a loan on favourable terms if they ever want to expand that business. Assuming their bank doesn't fail first, of course, and assuming the economy in their part of the country doesn't go into the toilet and takes their business down with it.

Why is Giuliani even being given a speaking spot? It's not as if he was a major factor in the campaign after the first primaries got underway; he sat down in Florida, generally away from the media eye, and got to see his support and funds drain and drain until, by the time the Florida primary actually happened, his campaign was almost more of a mirage than real threat. At least Huckabee was the last Republican challenger to McCain standing, and Romney the last real Republican challenge to McCain standing.

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.
