What is it with endorsing violence these days? Seems like I see it every time I go on line. :?

Sorry- we are dealing with pretty nasty folks and people tend to lose their tempers. We are talking about folks that picketed the funerals of soldiers and said they are roasting in hell... because the US isn't stoning the gays. They make the KKK like reasonable... okay, the are on par with the KKK.

I know, and normally I might not bother making an issue out of it, except that there's been a lot of this kind of talk these days. Though given the smilie, I suppose the above was intended as a joke, and I might have done better to ignore it.

I think a lot of people are burned out emotionally from following the election, and probably aren't able to check themselves as well as they might otherwise be able to. Throw in the scary situation with the economy on top of that, and you have a lot of jittery people who are operating with a lowered stress tolerance. For a lot of conservatives at least, anger is what comes out since their guy lost. I remember being a fairly unpleasant person for a week or two after Kerry lost in 2004, and I wasn't even worried about losing my job at all. If I were worried about my job status and I saw the country's leadership move in what I thought was the wrong direction, I'd be pretty mad too.

The WBC and Phelps still suck, but I don't really see how protesting Obama's grandmother's funeral is any different from any of the other funeral protests they do. How is this worse than protesting the funeral of a soldier, a gay person, or an AIDS sufferer?
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

It's not so much that it's worse as it's incredibly high profile, much higher than anything else they've really done.

It's really not, except that a lot of people see such an attack on POTUS as an attack on the country.
Shit, as much as I despise GWB, if Barbara Bush died tomorrow I sure as hell wouldn't be out protesting at her funeral and would be equally outraged at any assholes who were.
Phelps and his fellow WBC assholes wouldn't know human decency if it bit them in the ass.

As for my previous post, I wouldn't lie to the cops but I probably wouldn't go running forward and volunteer anything either.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier
