There's a fair bit of academic research on unions which basically says medium sized unions are the worst for unemployment and such. If they're small they have little enough power that acting like dicks screws their company and they lose out and if they cover most of the economy (i.e. Scandinavian style centralised negotiations) then they know that pushing up costs just increases inflation by an equivalent amount. So the big US auto unions are the worst size possible.
