Just never leave the house even in winter except swathed head to toe in clothes wearing a hat with opaque sunscreen makeup covering all exposed surfaces of your face. It's what I do for fashion purposes! Seriously, this threat is pretty mendacious, especially since the desired objective of the poster--lots of northerners getting skin cancer--is unlikely to happen because the conditions that brought this hole in the ozone layer about are very unlikely to reoccur on a regular basis, especially with the cessation of CFC use.

If we've already had cancer, can we be exempted from weemando's mandatory skin cancer? I know lung cancer isn't the same, but he commanded that I get cancer with such ferocity I thought I'd ask.

The hole formed in march/april 2011, because of the cold weather - I can't find anything current on it - only on the Antarctic one...

Question: On nearly every picture of the Antarctic hole, the hole is always surrounded by a ring of significant higher ozone density (more than at the equator) - I always thought that the ozone was simply missing, and not just pushed aside.

(It's obvious that ozone density over Australia is higher than at the equator...)
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

Meh. Given my hereditary factors, I'm already scheduled to have at least one cancer, maybe even two or three during my lifetime. So really, as far as cancer goes, if it could be "just" melanomas or some shit like that I'd be very relieved.

Well, with my luck it'll be some bad stuff like a brain tumor...

I love how people completely missed this bit because of all the trolling.
GLORIA MANNEY: Usually in the Arctic in the Northern Hemisphere there is only just a little bit of ozone loss, because it isn't that cold for that long. This year it was cold for longer than usual and so the chlorine was in forms that could destroy ozone, and so much more ozone was destroyed than in previous winters that we've observed.
The ozone hole formed because of the abnormally long winter.

I bet some idiots are going to use this as evidence that global warming/climate change is a hoax. "See guyz, it got cold! HAH! IN YOUR FACE AL GORE!" :banghead:

I'd also be interested to know if there was any enhancing effect from the Eyjafallajokul eruption - I think there are a couple of papers discussing the idea that ash surfaces may enhance ozone destruction. The very fine fraction emitted by Eyja is likely to have still been dicking around in the stratosphere by that point, but I don't know if the effect is significant enough to contribute to any real degree.

Thinktank wrote:Hell, lately the EPA in the US has been bitching because of how pitiful (according to many) the regs are that restrict how much ozone our industries can release into the environment.
Ozone in the stratosphere protects us from UV, but ozone in the troposhpere is a harmful pollutant. Tropospheric ozone does not mix into the stratosphere, therefore the EPA is legitimately concerned about industrial ozone emissions.
