Given anecedotal letters from teenage magazines and some personal experience in health education, maybe not......

I'm obviously speaking from a local perspective here but there are quite a significant number of people here who assume that one might get pregnant if one wears panties stained with semen, or oral sex, or assume that one won't get pregnant if one does it standing up or douching and etc.......

Dude, you're in Singapore, where the local Lord High Master is a raving puritan who tried to ban Internet pornography. I'm talking about the idea that we need to have abstinence as part of a "comprehensive sex education program", of the sort that Lord High Master probably wouldn't allow anyway.

Dude, we also had a comprehensive sex education programme that's starts at 13 years old, uses the same ABC programme as the British and stuff.

Hell, its only last year where the shit threw up by the Christian fundamentalists caused the ministry of education to review the sex ed programme so that abstinence became more emphasized, and more importantly to the fundies, toleration of the homosexual lifestyle(miminal as such content is) was removed.

Hell, reproductive lessons now begin at the age of 10.

I think the answer is simple. These lessons are a "chore" , even though reproductive biology is graded at secondary school level.

Throw in the fact that the local culture is conservative and parents reluctance to talk about the birds and bees, the standard chapter 13 of secondary lesson where reproductive biology is taught isn't working .

It gets even worse. We have national service, and one of the standard lessons taught to males is how to use a condom, taught to soldiers deploying overseas(god knows why they teach it to people going to Brunei or Australia though:D)

Granted, the number of soldiers actually deploying overseas on training exercises is limited but come on....... you had lessons on what condoms are since the age of 16 and even if you weren't shown the practical demonstration on how to use it in the army, you're bright enough how to read the instructions, right?

Edit: These are mostly just anecedotes and personal experience, but my limited scope in health education was.... instructive. And screws the fundies. When you have 13-14 year old entering clinics for STDs, the sex ed lessons we have don't start early enough. I just don't want to know who the fuck committed statutory rape on them either..........

What I really want to know is what makes these idiots think that abstinence will ever be seriously used by more than a handful of people anyway; even in John Calvin's Geneva, where people who had sex outside of marriage were executed, there was still premarital and extramarital sex. If executions won't stop sex, what makes them think a few hours over a school semester will have any fucking benefit at all?

Because how exactly is it unclear to use a condom if you are mentally advanced enough to say, put socks on? It should be self-evident merely by looking at the thing out of its package. Hearing this makes me wonder if there are similar lessons given to clarify how to take care of other everyday things. For example, wiping one's ass.

If you read back, I was addressing Mike Wong tangent regarding abstinence and the average teenager understanding that no sex= no pregnancy.

On a more serious note, the teaching of abstinence isn't "no sex= no pregnant". It also focuses on teaching teenagers means to say no and resist peer pressure, affirmation of not wanting to have sex and etc. The problem is that in a REAL sex education program, this is included on top of other details.

Hell, I would actually love to see a national sex ed program that includes stuff outside of public health concerns regarding teenage pregnancy and STIs..... You know, real "values" education in terms of teaching people respect, what is the meaning of entering into a relationship......

Well, that actually makes sense, but in that case you're actively trying to build general-purpose character, not to preach abstinence specifically.

That's a great idea if you want your school system to produce strong people and good citizens... and a bad idea if you're trying to force-fit them into a mold that you don't want them to be able to break out of under their own power.

It's true. Clearly what happens (rarely, it requires really unfortunate positioning) is that sperm flows out and then back in - it's not really my thing, but I would generally avoid unprotected anal sex even with people that you know to be healthy, since various germs that normally reside in the intestinal tract can be troublesome if they get into your bloodstream using small scrapes or cuts.

The thing is a real comprehensive sex ed includes those details as well, however, unlike abstinence only programs, due to the nature of time and space, less emphasis is placed on such workshops and etc. I mean, I'm now broadly generalising due to the varied nature of such programs as well as how one measure effectiveness but in general, abstinence only programs focus exclusively on delaying onset of teenage sexuality as a KPI and ignores teenage pregnancy, by assuming that delaying onset= no pregnancy. Or no sex= no pregnancy.
