I'd trust his motives if he hadn't posed with a shit-eating grin on his face.

Hardly. One man is going about his business helping unfortunates, quietly and without fanfare. The other had his picture taken at an accident scene in the middle of a private home grinning like a stooge while posing with a wrecked vehicle like some big game hunter with an elephant he's just bagged, tweeting about what he's done. Someone who does a good deed needn't broadcast that fact.
You should care more that Romney helped some unfortunates than that he took the photo. Helping people is the important part, not not taking credit for it.
Lets see:

Pope Francis: Long history of going out in (what cannot be a very effective) disguise to help the poor without being noticed. Continued doing this will he is the god damn pope. Instructs minions to deny that he does this until plausible deniability is gone.

Joshua Romney: Did not go above and beyond the call of duty. Sorry. But if you see a car accident like that and no emergency personnel are around, assisting them is the only valid human response. Only. It is Okay to post on twitter that you have done this. Hell, it would even be OK to post a picture with the family you helped save. Taken later. As they throw you a thank you party and everyone is celebrating being alive (or somesuch). But posting a smiling photo next the wreckage of their car is just...off. The ire might be a bit overblown, but that picture is certainly in bad taste.

I'll admit, my immediate thought was of a quote from Raising Steam about how Moist always tell people not to tell anyone of his good deeds, secure in the knowledge that A) It'll make them spread word FASTER and B) "And he told me not to tell anyone" means he also gains a reputation for modesty.

That said, if he's been doing it for a long time then, well, his actions speak for themselves here. Whether it's a publicity thing or a heartfelt gesture, the end result is the same.

Unless of course he's been doing anonymous good deeds for a sustained period of time at no apparent benefit to himself, to fool us into thinking that he's been doing anonymous good deeds for a sustained period of time at no apparent benefit to himself, the cunning bastard!

Oh please, he's just another human being, albeit the current evidence seems to indicate he's a particularly awesome human being.

When I do good things, I don't want to broadcast it either, lest I feel like a self-righteous dick. But on the other hand, I secretly hope people will inadvertently find out about my good deeds so that I can bask in the praise without feeling like a boastful dick. That way, everyone wins (especially me). It's probably the same with Pope Francis.
