To those who say it isn't about oil, I ask why Iraq. There are plenty of countries that are worse/more dangerous/hate america more than Iraq. Take Pakistan, It actually has Nuclear weapons, Is ruled by a general who is worse than Saddam, and has a clear and real link to Al Queada.
This isn't just some country that we pulled out of our ass, it's Iraq. It has a history of being a source of trouble for both the United States and the rest of the world.

BTW, if we were really interested in oil we would have seized the Kuwaiti reserves after Gulf War I. Or would be attacking Saudi Arabia now. Or would be invading Venezuela (they do have a mini-Castro, after all).

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Cuba will eventually choke on its socialist vomit. It will take care of itself.

We cannot do anything to Pakistan, for example, precisely because they have nuclear weapons. They are also a regional ally - Musharref isn't the best guy, but he's resisting the more radical Muslims in Pakistan as best he can.

They're planning ahead. There will be a time in the future when the US does desperately need oil. Isn't it logical to secure the supply now?
And when we desperately need oil - which is probably far off - why would the Middle Eastern oil fields still be filled? It's not like we're just going to let it sit there - it will be pumped out.

And that argument, or a variation thereof, can also be applied to most of the other countries people talk about when they say "Why Iraq?" Like Iran, for instance...counter-revolution is brewing, I do believe.

And North Korea, where China, South Korea, and Japan can pretty much handle it...

And so on. Iraq, on the other hand, was something that wouldn't take care of itself, nor would other countries be able to contain/take care of them.

We need to take care of Chavez, at home, before we move anywhere else in the wake of Iraq.

We need to spend about five years - certainly no less - stabilizing that area before we consider other options. Perhaps I might advocate a preemptive strike on Iranian reactors before they come fully online - though I'll leave that up to my government; they can more accurately judge the potential consequences than can I.
