Simply punishing France is rather immature and pointless.
However, if France and the French people (who if I am not mistaken elected Chirac) expect that their little hissy fit to be on the world stage will not have repercussions then they are simply dillusional. When you insult another country, as many in the U.S. think France has done, and then expect that country to treat you with respect you think far to highly of yourself.
The French governments only problem was thinking it still mattered on the world stage, however, now no one cares what the fuck the French say and people simply laugh at them. They missed the bus and were running after it, but now they may never catch it, because they had the tact(or lack there-of) to insult the bus driver.
It's not fair, its not just, but neither is life, you can argue against it but France will get some type of punishment down the line and their isn't much anyone can do now.

As far as I'm concerned, the French are welcome to help build Iraq.
It's clear that the Americans have a handle on contracts and government formation already, so why close the door to a potentially wealth investor?
Considering that we've nixed most of their concessions already - Iraq's oil wealth will be nationalized and then re-privatized with favoritism of American bidders -, there's really nothing left to do but kick them out altogether. And with that sort of action comes the room for another five years of sniping. It isn't worth it. We've stripped France of financial options. Taking their dignity doesn't interest me.
That's not even considering the large contribution French soldiers could make to peacekeeping. If they send troops that prevent ours from taking the front lines each day, let 'em come.
