Ah, the spectre of Sturm, Ruger, and Company rears it's ugly face again..
You're referring to Ruger's support of import bans on SKS-type weapons that directly compete with their Mini-14 line?
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Ah yes, you get a gold star

Reminds me of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission.

"You want to put ... region coding ... on DVDs?"
"Yeah. It will stop pirating-"
"Fuck the hell off, its uncompetitive and restricts fair consumer access."

So now all DVD players sold in Australia or regionless or can be legally modified to be as such.

"We have this new copy protection idea for music CDs. You see, all these people who make mp3s have computers. So we'll make CDs unreadable to computers."
"How about NO you fucking American nutjob. Thats discriminating against the portion of the market who use computers as CD players. So take that idea and shove it back up your fucking arse."

So now all CDs sold inside Australia don't have that form of copy protection, and if they do you can return it and maybe the ACCC will sue the company.

"You want to charge what for petrol and why?"
"Errr..."
"Fuck off."

So OPEC and petrol companies don't like the ACCC.
My daily mantra is: 'Thank God for Proff. Alan Fels!' Repeat until you feel clensed!

I fail to see why the films could not be released at the same time everywhere, then there would not be this problem. The dubbing and other such things can't take months, and in some markets (e.g the Nordic countries) only children's movies are dubbed, everything else is original language with subtitles, just as it is on TV. Fortunately the movie companies are finally catching hold of this unique notion and moving for global premieres for more movies (e.g. LotR I & II, X-Men 2 and others)

Speaking as some one who works in the industry, there is huge cost involved in showing films, each print would cost on average $2000. Now to distribute huge money-making success, that's a no brainer, you know that it will make money back, so LotR, SW, X2, Matrix etc are released co-currently because the studio is guaranteed to make money.

However with other 'mid-margin' films that may do good to great, there is a uncertainty so it is generaly practise to release it in one region first, and then see how well it did, before you decide to order the prints for other regions (if it didn't do too well each cinema only gets one print, if it did really well 2-3 prints).

Also by doing it in this method you get to save money on promotion, a film which bombed in the States, won't be promoted vigerously elswhere, because the Studio realises that it would be a waste of money. A film that did great, will have the extra free 'hype' promotion, once again saving money.

There is more to it than this, also films that did poor, well when they are about to be moved to other areas, rather than ordering a brand new print (costing you $2000 bucks), you just shipped used prints out, saving even more money.

The list goes on and on.
