one world goverment?

Its something that I would hope to happen someday.
The world can't really go on existing as seperate nations forever, things like the internet and faster travel are making bounderies harder to draw, some things are going to have to be sorted out internationally, and from there its likely to carry on until one day, it happens.

I suspect that even if we were to develop Star Trek level technology, there would be no reason for Earth to unify. Cochrane, as I recall, was planning on selling his drive to Malaysia. To me, my realistic thought is--why isn't there the Federation of Malaysia competing with the Kingdom of Australia and the Republic of Argentina and whatnot instead of the UFP? I think that just like Europe, went on to dominate the world through a colonialist system though being disunified, that if Earth had these technologies, it would simply result in a repeat of the great Imperial age, projected into space--there would still not being an human unity for a long, long time, if ever.Nathan F wrote:

It's impossible, unless military force makes it happen. The internet and faster travel are not having a discernable effect--ease of communications are allowing for ethnic groups to more easily preserve their identities just as much as they are to bring the world closer together. The history of the recent past, especially, has been one of balkanization, not greater unity. The only exception is in Europe, where as usual the exception in turn is the Balkans (Which one expects will be long, if ever, in fully joining the EU). The example of the EU is not really an applicable one--the EU states share an unusually common culture and watching them unify would be like splitting China into its component provinces and then watching it reunify.Sharp-kun wrote:

So explain Europe. That we have our difference does not mean they cannot be overcome. After all France was no always united nor was Britian.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:Humans are wired to be "Us vs Them" in their mentality. The States of America also have a federal government. That the world is as it is does not lock us in a time paradox where nothing changes.Nathan F wrote:The states of the United States don't even get along, how exactly would the entire world get along enough to get into one big government?

Indeed. the proposition is that the world have a government that does have power.FaxModem1 wrote:I thought the world did have a one world government, the UN, a VERY loose confederacy with no power at all.

This is rude and bigoted, but there are too many cultures on Earth that can't coexist with any other culture. As long as all of them exist, there can't be peace because (such as in the Middle East) their enmity has become their identity. To change their minds and take away that conflict would destroy them as nations/races/faiths.

So? It is a tautology to point out that one world government means the destruction of individual nations.Metrion Cascade wrote:This is rude and bigoted, but there are too many cultures on Earth that can't coexist with any other culture. As for races and faiths, that's ridiculous. Multiple races can successfully coexist within a single nation, and we have numerous examples of this. The more radical, extreme faiths would not get along, but they don't get along even with separate nations, so I don't see what difference it would make if there were one world government.
The problem is simply one of power; no one is powerful enough to make this happen.
