I've lived my enitre life in large cities: first in St. Petersburg, Russia (population: 5 million), then in Brooklyn (NYC), and now, just outside of NYC (15 minutes on a bus get me to 42 Street). So, here are the advantages of big cities over small towns (imo)
1) Mass transportation. I don't know how to drive. Why? I don't need to. Wherever I need to get to, there is either a bus or a subway that goes there.
2) Restaurants/movie theaters/supremarkets/shopping malls. All within close proximity.
3) All stores/restaurants don't close at 10 pm.
Have a very nice day.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."
Must be a regional thing. I dunno.Darth Wong wrote: I spent 4 years living in a small town. They simply don't know what upscale food (or real ethnic food, for that matter) tastes like, nor are they interested in finding out.
Until two months ago, I lived in a town of 40,000. I identified a few people by their cars (generally only in certain areas of town, though). Certainly nobody knows what everyone else does. No past or family history trapping. I certainly know good food, and we've got several restaurants that are actually very upscale. No real stagnant atmosphere to speak of.Obviously, less than 10,000 population fits the bill, but the actual line of demarcation would be somewhat higher, perhaps a few tens of thousands. There's a certain stagnant atmosphere that small towns always have, and certain social traditions such as learning to identify someone by his car, having everyone know what you did on the weekend, being trapped by reputations based on past histories and even family histories, etc.
Hmm. I think "a few tens of thousands" is inaccurate, at least in my area.

I think you're being a little hard on the continental breakfast (except the Coke part ... Coke for breakfast?). Bacon and a scrambled egg sandwich are awesome in the morning, especially you're a student who doesn't regularly eat breakfast.Darth Wong wrote:Ugh! Do you live in Toronto, or a suburb? Does Toronto even have suburbs? 10,000 is not what I'd consider a small town. I've met people from really small towns (I'm talking as little as 40 residents to at most 500). My hometown has about 20,000 people, and it's a suburb of Chicago. There are at least 3 malls within a half hour, two within 15 minutes, lots of nice restaurants (we've got a very good Cuban place in town) and plenty of places to shop.

Try eating really healthy for a few months, and then eating that continental breakfast. I swear to you that it will make you feel sick. You've simply become accustomed to crap.Durandal wrote:I think you're being a little hard on the continental breakfast (except the Coke part ... Coke for breakfast?). Toronto has suburbs. However, a Toronto suburb generally has a population numbering in the hundreds of thousands.Do you live in Toronto, or a suburb? Does Toronto even have suburbs?
That's not even a town. That's a brief decrease in the highway speed limit.10,000 is not what I'd consider a small town. I've met people from really small towns (I'm talking as little as 40 residents to at most 500).
Suburbs are different, because they're really parts of cities in every practical way. The only reason they're considered separate is due to government jurisdiction. My hometown has about 20,000 people, and it's a suburb of Chicago. There are at least 3 malls within a half hour, two within 15 minutes, lots of nice restaurants (we've got a very good Cuban place in town) and plenty of places to shop.

Expensive. Since I live on the Waterfront ( I get a view of the Manhattan skyline), all housing costs an arm and a leg. Our apartment cost $300K, and it doesn't even have a cool view or a balcony. Those cost up t0 $600k. Houses cost around a mil or so. Definitely not a cheap place to live.Hamel wrote:How expensive is the living in your neighborhood, Fgalkin?

I have a Coke for breakfast almost everyday, although something like bacon, eggs, and such is a few times a month. A few times a month wont kill ya.
As for people in small towns not knowing good ethnic food, my personal experience is that any town that is over 50% white, tends to have the worst "ethnic" food around.
Hell, even in a city like SF that is swimming with Chinese, still has Chinese resteraunts that target Whitey and suck ass. It is funny to see all the white people inside eating the food and acting like they are embracing culture or something. [/personal rant]

The rule that I've always heard was to watch what the people who work there eat and order that.

In a regular Chinese resteraunt it is not uncommon for the staff to sit down together during the slow times and eat. Usually they will not eat the stuff the patrons are getting simply because most Chinse themselves dont eat stuff like that on daily basis. The staff will usually share a meat dish, vegetable dish, and of course rice.Glocksman wrote:The rule that I've always heard was to watch what the people who work there eat and order that.

My local Chinese joint's employees enjoy a bit of their own food when things are slow.

To be sure, I'd say you need to look at who the Chinese people eating there, not just that they are there. A lot of the younger generation don't know better either.

Yes, the rules are not set in stone, more guidelines than anything. The nicer resteraunts will have waiters in uniform and the ducks will be hidden.neoolong wrote: Actually, the "nicer" Chinese places don't have stuff hanging in the windows.

Chinese restraunts?
Ok, this newbie has you all beat. First off, read my previous post. Second, untill 6th grade I went to schools in the suburbs south of San Francisco. 6-8th grade I went to a school in a... village or settlement I'd suppose you'd call it, of 74... yes 74 people. This was 10 minutes from a town of 2500 people, 25 minutes from a town of 25,000, 1 hour from 60,000 people, and about 3 hours from 3 milion or so people in LA. I've worked at the jewish owned, Mexican cooked, white served P.F. Changs resteraunts which have some traditional and some not so traditional. I've also lived in communities which are probably 80% asian so I DO know real chinese food, though I never did get around to bringing my favorite resteraunt a bamboo plant.... I'll get around to it.
So, now that we're done with the history lesson, let's look at what people eat and slowly traverse backwords in themes of this thread. Chinese food can be good, whether it's Mcchinese or traditional, your preference. Rural people can know much that city people might night and visa versa obvously. Healthy food... is also relitive, in France they eat all types of crap but are still healthy (some say it's the wine, coruse so many dieing because of heat problems makes me rethink their healthyness). I could eat the healthiest food around and just sit on my ass all day and still die young (this is provided of course that we're using todays technology). You are what you eat is true, however what you truely become is up to you. Money is quite relative as well. What you can live on and the quality at which you live on that money are both are determined on where you're living. It's more likely you'll be making more and spending more in the city, who knows though, which enviroment is right for you? You can be miserable/happy in both enviroments, and even the inbetween... the suberbs. Cities AND towns both have cute girls, and both have girls/guys that secretly carry crabs, herpies, wierd green oozing alien slime, who knows. If you think it's so much healthier to live in a city because you can access healthier food from resteraunts on a normal basis... which isn't nessisarily true, think about the smog and dirtyness factor that negates that. I have nothing more to sayyyyy.

Personally, I live in a Mellencamp-glorified small town. I don't like how boring the people are. No one in Ponte Vedra is as interesting as you guys.
Ponte Vedra is basically a playpen for rich folks. Well policed though. What would happen in New York, Los Angeles or Toronto if I regularly went for walks at 1:00 AM?
