I think the biggest obstacle to a split in one of the major parties is the dislike both parties have for each other that makes it so they don't want to risk throwing the election to them (Didn't Theodore Roosevelt end up hating Wilson to the point where he refused another Progressive nomination in 1916, fearing it would make Wilson win again?). However, if it did happen, the new party could easily make a significant showing.
