Just saw the videos on CNN on the burnt out hulk of a marine AAVP7A1, struck by RPGs. The explosion must've been large. These things should never have been deployed. Too big, too weak. Too bad the AAAV wasn't ready.

they are off to Afghanistan, not Iraq. I still have some friends in 2nd Battalion, 14th...this was planned a while ago.

Useful however, since of all the things Saddam could blow up some fairly important bridges over the Euphrates should have been high on the list. As it is, at least two seem to have been seized intact.

AAAV would ahve been good. Even better if budget cuts had not chooped down its weapons, but IOC is around 2006.

Just a note to people who don't like an alternative source- I want no arguments about it on this thread. It's news, and considering the bullcrap coming from all sides (we took Um Qasr, no we didn't, we took Basra, no we didn't, the 51st Mech surrendered, no it didn't, we shot down an AH-64D with a bolt action rifle etc) I see no reason why it shouldn't be on this sticky.

But by all means, feel free to critique elsewhere (I split the first debate on this earlier- it's somewhere on page 2 by now I guess ....)

I just saw on MSNBC, that the AH-64D that went down, was destroyed, by a precision guided bomb.

BBC told half an hour ago that parts of an Iraqi armour unit (they did not know if they were regular army or Republican Guards), consisting of 17 or 18 tanks, attempted a breakout against British troops in Basra. In the following battle, the British Challenger 2 tanks were able to defeat them. No information about possible casualties yet.

Only T-55s are part of the Basra defense, IIRC. Not surprising. But then again, even Iraqi T-72M and T-72M1 tanks would be fodder against Challenger 2 tanks.

What's the deal with the 'Apaches'?

Why would a squadron of up to thirty attack helicopters have to turn back, most with damage, in the fact of small-arms fire from the ground?

Because if they had stayed, they would have been shot down. It was heavy AA fire, not small arms.

There's a new stickied thread where you can discuss the information provided in this one. Quote the relevant stuff from here to there. Further attempts at debate here WILL BE DELETED. This is a news thread, not an endless war debating thread.

Shia muslims sympathetic to the Coalition have begun an uprising against Saddam Heussein in Iraq's second largest city, Basra.

British Artillery is aiding the rebellion, currently.

No more is known at this moment.

The BBC's ticker is reporting it, no article so far. FNC, CNN and MSNBC show no indication as of 1223 Eastern.

Sky news has just reported it.

Iraqi forces have begun firing mortars into the uprising crowds.

British forces are massing on the outskirts of Basra waiting to go in, and British artillery is firing on the resistance to the uprising.

Supply ships have been attempting to get into the city, but the water has been mined by Iraqis.

USAF is preparing to supply fire support in the form of JDAMs to the uprising.

Sky news is reporting that there is an uprising in Basra against Saddam's forces.

Nothing on the internet yet, though.

As I mentionedhere, it is at present a small uprising in one part of the city. Hopefully with support it will grow.

The British have to be careful in thier response, s the Commander has just said on the TV "It's well inside the city, we can't just go criusing in like a Sledgehammer!"

Links to follow hopefully.
