Trains are almost stupidly easy targets. I've regularly gotten on trains with a black, military duffel large enough to carry plenty of explosives, guns or whatever. No searches or anything, they just let you on. The one reason they might not have attacked American trains yet is probably because they're never on time. You can't plan a coordinated terrorist attack out and risk one or more of your Amtrak targets being an hour-and-a-half late, as they so frequently are.

Now the CTA or Metra Rail in Chicago, on the other hand, are very good with schedules and have no security to speak of. Every time I ride the El or Metra, I think of how easy it would've been for me to sneak a bomb on board and detonate it. And that's a scary thought, because I don't want to.

As I understood it, European trains are excellent with schedules.

At this point the chronology is as follows:

0851: First incident between Moorgate and Liverpool St. An explosion hits the train 100 yards from Liverpool St, in the tunnel. There are seven fatalities.

0856: The second blast happens on a tube train between King’s Cross and Russell Square. 21 are confirmed dead.

0917: A third blast, this one at Edgware Road. It was powerful enough to blow a hole into another train, with three trains in all involved. Five dead.

0947: The fourth blast, this time on a bus in Tavistock Place. There are no numbers on fatalities from this attack.

I fear that the reason they don't have a casualty count on the bus is because the body parts are too difficult to piece together.

That's true for mainland Europe. British trains are usually on schedule when everything's working well...the problem is that the infrastructure is in such a bad shape that things are rarely working well.

Sir, you should see what Railtrack left of our railway network. I assure you, punctuality is the least of their concerns.

At least it isn't the sort caused by explosions nearby. I have friends who are caught up in this still even if it seems all clear. I imagine every news network on the planet is busy as all hell currently.

It's a special government commitee set up to deal with emergencies and terrorist events. Not very well named, I must admit.

Not very well named? Probably because it's an acronym: Cabinet Office Briefing Room A.

TURNSTYLE is also another one, mainly based in bunkers deep underground in the Cotswalds.

No doubt about that, and it's the same way up here. The scenario which we agreed would be the most likely to happen was a mass suicide bombing in a large crowded train or subway station, most likely Grand Central since it's the best known. 5-10 guys screaming "Allah Ackbar!" and blowing themselves and several hundred other people to shreds in Grand Central would fuck the city over almost as well as 9/11, and if it was done in several cities the terror effects would be unthinkable. And there's very little we can do about it.

Back on topic. I'm amazed at how well they seem to be handling things over in London. They are true professionals.

Its ban enough (terrible) that they attacked London but why do it during the G8 a conference that could be a very important step to getting rid of poverty in Africa that’s is another 3000(I think it is 3000) deaths a day that could be there fault.

Its terrible but some sick psychopaths will do, what possible reason can some one what for attacking trains? I hope my cousins ok.

What a lovely way to end my workday.... :(

My condolences to all Londoners. CNN seems to be blah-blahing by this point.

Fucking terrorists. Don't worry, they can't beat us for 50 years of trying, they can't beat shit.

A second condolence.

I get 26%, but meh (Canada 9.9 million km^2, British Isles 0.3m, Oceania 9.0m, the Subcontinent 4.5m, Burma 0.7m, Africa ca. 10m, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan 0.6m, other regions minor contributors = ca. 35 million km^2 out of ca. 135 million km^2).
