It makes me wish I'd known about all of this beforehand and invested in some oil futures in 2000, when below $20/bbl. oil was around. You'd have at least double the investment even with the falling dollar.

It was down to 50.xx in January. $37 in what, 9 months? I don't think oil prices have gone up like this other than during the Arab Oil Embargo and the Iran-Iraq war.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid flashpoints for price volatility just offer a smokescreen for the big story, with people blaming bullshit like speculation, ME woes, or the last storm, and not looking at, say, the last 9-months-picture.

People are still referring to Katrina as an explanation for price volatility in commodities. A storm that sank a city, but one that happened over two years ago all the same.

Every now and then a random editorial on Google News, or a talking head on CNBC or Bloomberg. If they don't tell it as it is or feel blaming it on tensions in the Middle-east is passé, then Katrina comes up.
