All I know about the series is that the promo art for the movie/game seems to feature something out of Steven Colbert's nightmares.

That would be Iorek Byrnison, the armored polar bear. :D He's kind of an awesome character.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Did you not even bother reading my post? Or do you consider something other than a "false portrayal or claim" a legitimate reason to want to ban something?
I did read your post. Why did you think I didn't? The point Ryan was trying to make is that not wanting negative stories spread about your organization is only a natural thing. Perhaps, legitimate was the wrong word?

Since when is "You can't blame them for acting that way" a valid defense for someone acting like a dick because someone else actually had the balls to call a spade a spade?

When you live in a society where speech is supposed to be free and your country has prided itself, rightly or not, on its First Amendment freedoms, waxing wistful about "wouldn't it be nice if these mean atheist authors weren't allowed to criticize us" is a little weird. They're basically saying the only reason they aren't actually trying to ban it is because it's not politically viable (due to the First Amendment), not because they think speech and expression should be free even when they don't like what's being said.

I find it distressing, but not altogether surprising, that these Catholics' natural response to criticism of their pet organization is to wish such criticism were banned. I do find it surprising that people here at SDN can sympathize.

The anti-religion message is fairly explicit in the last book, but in Northern Lights it is no more anti-religion than any piece of fiction which features a somewhat sinister church. Even then, my recollection was that the church was very much a secondary villain to the more immediate ones of the bears and the child-snatchers.

I love the smell of September in the morning. Once we got off at Richmond, walked up to the 'G, and there was no game on. Not one footballer in sight. But that cut grass smell, spring rain...it smelt like victory.

Dynamic. When [Kuznetsov] decided he was going to make a difference, he did it...Like Ovechkin...then you find out - he's with Washington too? You're kidding.

It isn't. How did you get to that?

You aren't one of those miserable folk who think something like this is an accurate interpretation of Christianity, are you?

How the fuck else is it supposed to be interpreted except as a justification for their behavior?

You aren't a retard that feels a need to stick up for Christians being dicks just because someone has the temerity to call their behavior dickish, are you?

Who wants to bet the movie makes it into the Threatdown, for it's hidden agenda of promoting bears as good guys.

I'm sure this boycott will really hurt the creators, who were no doubt counting on a huge Catholic audience

I think I misread you...

Oh, no. If you were merely referring to them being dicks, that's understandable.

Hell, I can even agree.

Again, perhaps legitimate was the wrong word. I certainly don't sympathize with them, but I can understand why they wouldn't want them protrayed negatively regardless of whether that information is true or not.

once catholics like Colbert and Mel get in on the bashing, lots of us lapsed types will watch it just because of that publicity.
