What about pill popping? That's as easy as drinking a beer. Further, in this hypothetical world, there are going to be a lot of people who suddenly have extra hours in the day that they used to fill by getting drunk/passing out/being hung over. If the withdrawals don't drive them to seek some sort of escape, simple boredom could.

Pill popping isn't a sociable activity. How many out of the group of people responsible for their own and others deaths went along with drinking binges and onto the path to alcoholism because it was the fashionable thing to do? It also doesn't generally produce the same effects. So again, I find your claims dubious at best.

Pill popping isn't a sociable activity. And i've just found another report that suggests that following the campaign in the early 90's against ecstasy people just turned to cocaine for whatever reasons.

If it happens with one drug, logically it is going to happen with alcohol as well.

Face it, you were the one over-simplifying things. There's a lot of different types of drugs out there, all of them with their down sides. A lot of them easy to obtain and easy to take.

Again, you're not paying attention. Packer's argument was based on the assumption that more than the amount of people who have been dying would turn into pill popping junkies or looking for other sources of their fix overnight without taking into account where those death totals are coming from, and how many of those that died were one-offs and freak accidents. The thought that even more would turn into junkies is a massive leap in logic.

The only example I can think of is what happened on some Native Indian reserves a while back. Alcoholism was (and I believe still is) a major problem, and some reserves banned alcohol altogether and apparently did a pretty good job of it. Which then led to the natives huffing gasoline to get intoxicated.

They also expect the incoming ban on party pills in New Zealand will lead to higher use of ecstasy once it is enacted, though only time will tell.

Why would they necessarily turn into Junkies?

He's talking about casual drinkers not alcoholics.

how many more chronic abusers of it live, or, are killed my something completely unrelated to their alcoholism? How many drunk drivers simply get lucky and make it home from the bar every time? How many alcoholics' livers continue to withstand the punishment? How many accidents brought on by drunkenness don't result in any significant injury?

Firstly, they're definitely going to go through very painful withdrawals. Maybe they'll medicate those with pills and gain a new addiction. Secondly, a great number of people simply have difficulty coping with their shitty lot in life, and require an escape to function.

Casual drinkers. Really.
