I don't always dig his comedy, but in the highest tradition of comedians he pushed the envelope of propriety, was even arrested for his 7 Words routine, and generally made the world a slightly better place. I'm glad he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize a few days ago; it's a fine thing for greatness to be recognized in it's own time. (even if only barely in this case.)

The more I think about this the more empty I feel. Not just for the loss of his brilliant comedy buy for the fact that I never got to see him perform live. I kept meaning to go but it was always one of those 'well, next time' situations for whatever reason. Now there won't be one.

It had been one of the things on my List of Things To Do Before I Die: "See George Carlin perform live." There were a couple of opportunities, but work and such kept me from hearing about them quickly enough, or leaving me free to do it. And now.....

Allow me to use this to go into an irreverent tirade about people's reaction to this news: his passing is really enlightening as to exactly how little tolerance others will extend towards the beliefs of others. In life, the guy was vehemently against belief in the supernatural. He would have been pissed at people invoking it about him despite his often stated convictions against it. Which is what is constantly happening in most places I look. Yet when this contradiction gets brought up, the reaction is that it is disrespectful to tell others how to grieve rather then it is disrespectful to blow off one of the mans deepest convictions.

So yeah, really says a lot as to how we are supposed to respect the beliefs of religion when it comes to how we treat and speak of the dead, but an atheist, well, fuck that his beliefs don't matter.

This is sorta interesting... I can't remember a memorial thread that didn't have at least one "negative" post about the person it was about. I wonder if that speaks more to his beliefs being mostly in line with the overall beliefs of the board or if it truly is rare to loose a good person.

Only an idiot thinks that you can't criticize political figures or systems if you don't participate in them. Do you think that all of us foreigners are automatically disqualified from criticizing George W. Bush because we don't vote in American elections?

I think you would have to be a fucking moron to think that these criticisms carry any serious weight. Especially when compared to the very serious problems that have caused criticism in other memorial threads.

Havokeff is referring to certain threads about white separatist politicians or Catholic religious figures, in which people here bashed them (and quite deservedly so), and wondering why we're not doing the same with George Carlin, as if he's done anything remotely comparable.

Of course not, but like you said, you are foreigners. You have no ability to effect change in our system. This man, who had widespread influence and a voice people listened to in our society could, and he chose not to.

Yeah. That was a refernece to my previous post. Column A being that his views are in line with the majority of this board and Column B being that he was a genuinely good person. NOT that I think they are good or even valid criticisms, especially not from me.

There you go being all omniscient again. No, what I was referring to was my own recollection of the memorial threads I have read and the fact that even the most well respected person seems to get one person that says something negative about them. Not the bashing that so many truly deserve.
