Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Huh. That's less than 10 condoms per person. Though, assuming an even split between gender, that's almost 20 condoms per penis, so I certainly hope that would suffice for the three weeks they're there. -Alferd Packer
I'm so sad I never saw him live. I thought I had at least a couple more years...
RIP George.

This is the guy they want to use to win over "young people?" Are they completely daft? I'd rather vote for a pile of shit than a Jesus freak social regressive.

I don't always dig his comedy, but in the highest tradition of comedians he pushed the envelope of propriety, was even arrested for his 7 Words routine, and generally made the world a slightly better place. I'm glad he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize a few days ago; it's a fine thing for greatness to be recognized in it's own time. (even if only barely in this case.)
Oh man, this sucks. He performed at my college once but I wasn't able to get tickets. Now I wish I had camped out outside the box office or something.

The more I think about this the more empty I feel. Not just for the loss of his brilliant comedy buy for the fact that I never got to see him perform live. I kept meaning to go but it was always one of those 'well, next time' situations for whatever reason. Now there won't be one.

It had been one of the things on my List of Things To Do Before I Die: "See George Carlin perform live." There were a couple of opportunities, but work and such kept me from hearing about them quickly enough, or leaving me free to do it. And now.....
Allow me to use this to go into an irreverent tirade about people's reaction to this news: his passing is really enlightening as to exactly how little tolerance others will extend towards the beliefs of others. In life, the guy was vehemently against belief in the supernatural. He would have been pissed at people invoking it about him despite his often stated convictions against it. Which is what is constantly happening in most places I look. Yet when this contradiction gets brought up, the reaction is that it is disrespectful to tell others how to grieve rather then it is disrespectful to blow off one of the mans deepest convictions.
So yeah, really says a lot as to how we are supposed to respect the beliefs of religion when it comes to how we treat and speak of the dead, but an atheist, well, fuck that his beliefs don't matter.

PS. I see that none of the major news outlets mention his outspoken opposition to religion in their various eulogies. They always mention his "edgy" comedy only with respect to his use of profanity.
Well yeah, but you don't go around talking about how the recently deceased are burning in hell. And trust me, as an atheist most believe he is burning in hell. It's just not polite.

This is sorta interesting... I can't remember a memorial thread that didn't have at least one "negative" post about the person it was about. I wonder if that speaks more to his beliefs being mostly in line with the overall beliefs of the board or if it truly is rare to loose a good person.

Well really, what would you criticize him for? Previous memorial threads for religious leaders, political leaders who were once white separatists, etc. provided some rather obvious targets for criticism.

Carlin embodies many traits we all love here. If you can find anyone who truly despised the man, then he's either a troll or confused about what we're about.

Well someone could certainly criticize him for his drug use. Or even that he didn't vote, yet constantly railed on our political figures and systems. Anyway I think it is a little from column A and quite a bit from column B.

The guy started in the 60s.

Only an idiot thinks that you can't criticize political figures or systems if you don't participate in them. Do you think that all of us foreigners are automatically disqualified from criticizing George W. Bush because we don't vote in American elections?
Anyway I think it is a little from column A and quite a bit from column B.
I think you would have to be a fucking moron to think that these criticisms carry any serious weight. Especially when compared to the very serious problems that have caused criticism in other memorial threads.

I don't remember anything negative in the Heath Ledger thread, well except for the that church protest thing but, I don't think that counts since that was an article from another site.

Havokeff is referring to certain threads about white separatist politicians or Catholic religious figures, in which people here bashed them (and quite deservedly so), and wondering why we're not doing the same with George Carlin, as if he's done anything remotely comparable.

Its a pity he's gone. Who's going to beat the truth into the heads of hoi polloi now? Atheist, comedian, and liked by the mass; that's not going to happen again for a long time.

Is that any kind of valid excuse?

Of course not, but like you said, you are foreigners. You have no ability to effect change in our system. This man, who had widespread influence and a voice people listened to in our society could, and he chose not to.

Yeah. That was a refernece to my previous post. Column A being that his views are in line with the majority of this board and Column B being that he was a genuinely good person. NOT that I think they are good or even valid criticisms, especially not from me.

There you go being all omniscient again. No, what I was referring to was my own recollection of the memorial threads I have read and the fact that even the most well respected person seems to get one person that says something negative about them. Not the bashing that so many truly deserve.
