I know that black women are more likely to marry men of other races than black men are likely to marry across racial lines, and partly it's because in some areas there aren't enough black men to go around. I have to wonder if HIV infection rates might also be a factor, men of other races being seen as "safer".

Really? Of the mixed couples I've seen around (western NY), the incidence of black man/white woman is far more prevalent than black woman/white man. I'm not sure how many of those couples are actually married, but the one married mixed couple I know is of the former variety (for what my anecdotal evidence is worth).

Going purely anecdotal here, but when I live outside Detroit, for the most part if an interracial couple was a black man and a white woman, more often then not they would be towards the lower end of the social economic scale. However, if the couple was a white man and black woman, they tended to be middle and upper middle class. Just curious to how the Chicago area compared

Fits with theory pretty well actually...

In poor areas, a woman is going to bias mate selection in favor of men that have good genes/can provide better physical protection for them and their offspring. Unless of course she finds a way to get out of the poor environment entirely by finding a mate higher on the socio-economic ladder.

Black men tend to be slightly larger IIRC, thus offering better protection to the female and the offspring and providing genes that allow their children to be the same. There are, (also IIRC) more of them in poor areas, and due to self segregation and higher numbers often have higher status in poor neighborhoods, thus offering protection, and a degree of provisoning for the offspring.

In richer neighborhoods, it is a numbers game. Not many black people, sad to say, so the black females that are there are "foced" (by sheer numbers) to mate with white males.

It is worth noting that I am only loosely remembering the stats for this stuff, and could be wrong. It has been a while since I have seen them.

In low income areas? It is the large aggressive men
