The simple reality that any economist or game theorist will tell you is often people will not make collective mutually and uniformly beneficial decisions without adequate evidence that all others will comply with the compact. The State can sometimes successfully offer the forum and means to develop and enforce these social compacts, for everyone's long-term benefit. This is often impossible with atomized individual action, with powerful selfish incentives to "opt-out" or cheat. It is the classic Prisoner's Dilemma.

Rand Paul is at it again!

This time it appears his "certification" for being an eye doctor was passed by a bored... He is the chair of.

Republican Rand Paul says questions about whether he's board-certified as an eye surgeon are an attack on his livelihood.

"It's a personal assault on my ability to make a living," the GOP Senate nominee from Kentucky told the Associated Press.

Paul has attracted national attention for his libertarian views on civil rights and other issues since trouncing an establishment-backed candidate for the nomination May 18.

The controversy was stirred up this weekend by our Gannett colleagues at the Louisville Courier-Journal. Our sister newspaper reported that Paul, who has a Bowling Green eye surgery practice, touts his board certification from the National Board of Ophthalmology. The president and owner of this board? Paul. His wife is vice president of the group, and his father-in-law is listed as its secretary.

The C-J story reported that a medical specialties board tied to the American Medical Association doesn't recognize Paul's certification, because his group is not accredited. From 1995 through 2005, Paul was certified by an AMA-recognized certification board. Paul says he let his certification lapse over a dispute over who the American Board of Ophthalmology recertifies.

Democrat Jack Conway's campaign says Paul is "betraying" the trust of Kentucky voters by "stonewalling" and "refusing to answer basic questions." Conway and Paul are in a tight race to succeed Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning, a Republican, in November.

The AP says Paul, who went to Duke University's medical school, is licensed to practice.

Who needs certification anyway? Once enough people have lost an eye or limb or life, the invisible hand of the free market will decide which doctor to patronise, and the bad doctor will lose his business when people vote with their wallets! All these "exams" and "certifications" are just ways the government wants to intrude in our lives. It's Socialism, people!

It's unseemly, but he's still licensed to practice, so it's not like he's breaking any laws. It's just unethical as all hell.

It's not a bored, it's a board. :| I'm sorry to be a nitpicky spelling Nazi and go off-topic but you frequently make spelling mistakes and word substitutions that really confuse.

bored = uninterested, not motivated, or tired.
board = a panel of experts representing an organization, or, a piece of lumber.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

I just checked, Word 2003 would not have caught it. So you'll have to depend on memory. Won't be hard now that you've made the mistake once :)

(apologies for the diversion)
