Nancy Reagan, an Influential and Stylish First Lady, Dies at 94

I think Reagan's policies have played a fairly large part in getting us to where we are today, and that's nothing to celebrate. His wife was complicit in at least some of these policies and if we're just looking at what their policies did and not the intentions behind them, I don't think either should be celebrated or held in any sort of esteem. For better or worse they leave behind a legacy that can be boiled down to a quasi-religious icon to the right wing, trickle down economics, and a costly war on drugs. Nancy for her part comes across as being a very pearl clutching 'think of the children' type and I'm just glad that we don't need to listen to a woman like her telling us to 'just say no' to a variety of activities that she has little understanding of.

Given that she wasn't especially politically active in her later years, I'm not exactly happy that she's dead, but I could also care less that she's passed. She lived a more comfortable life than most and died far better off that most of us ever will. I don't see anything wrong with being happy about her passing either, we all die, and being dead doesn't make you any less of a target than you were in life. In fact, some people are bad enough that their hastened death should only be seen as a good thing, Adolf Hitler or Josef Stalin come to mind as easy examples of men that nobody was sad to see go. I don't feel this way about Nancy Reagan, but I certainly understand why some people would.

Now, I think a more serious reply is needed. I already explained that I don't want to be or feel like a hypocrite. If a person's death does not make me sad, it simply doesn't.

Next, I think the very practice of making "X passed away" front-page news in case of famous people is bad, from the standpoint of civilization. You can probably understand why if you think a bit about it.

Right now, thousands of people are passing away unnaturally. It happens in under the bridges, it happens in the Middle East, it happens in the cold Central Asian steppes. Fake rescue vests sold by human smugglers to get people from Hell and into Elysium are washed up on the Greek shores. There are too many dying in oblivion, nameless.

But there also are so-called celebrities. Politicians. People who crawl up in the corrupt system. One of them dies to a plethora of RIP+1.

Let me honestly say that upon examining the life of Nancy Reagan, I found the following facts: (1) she was an actress, one of the ridiculously overpaid luxury jobs for the upper class (2) she helped her husband, who lied (Iran-Contra), who put poorer Americans in misery and whose political course to serve the overclass was never once a secret to anyone, who was elected bin a corrupt game of big money playing on people's worst tribal fears! Bear in the woods, ooh ooh.

Please tell me I'm wrong. How, from a humanist viewpoint, thousands of nameless deaths don't deserve a "RIP+1", but a celebrity politician does.

Is there a point buried in there? Those are current events that have a bearing on international policy. This is about the death of a 94 year old former wife of a President whose last point of relevance was over a decade ago when she backed funding for Stem Cell research.

Late reply to posts above, I haven't seen the thread since I had initially posted. I sincerely apologize for posting what I did, I meant absolutely no disrespect. It was in reference to her Just Say No campaign and I feel nothing but admiration and respect for the former first lady.

I do admit being emotional over this and did not exercise good judgement, I should know better being a member for as long as I have been that's no excuse for a spammy post, Ms. reagan and everone here deserves more than that. I will exercise better discretion in the future. I ask forgiveness to anyone that I offended, I'm really sorry.
