The red cross on Florida's flag is indeed a nod to the Confederacy. It'd be somewhat odd to have it as the cross of St. Patrick, considering Florida's Spanish roots

...why are all the Euro flags so much cooler than the American ones? Even the ones that are just bars seem to have nicer color schemes.

I'm not neutral, but I sincerely believe the Portuguese flag beats the crap of almost all the others. The Star&Strips, the Union Jack and the E.U flag are also very cool. I don't care too much for all the variations of the three bars, horizontal or vertical. It shows lack of imagination.
No, but all those (except the EU) also have their own Coats of Arms, and the provinces have their own Anthems
