What if she was low on fuel? Then running the engine for the duration of storm might simply not be possible and sails or sea anchor is the only option to keep bow pointed against waves. Also she may have wanted to keep some fuel as reserve in case engine power is really needed like when some sort of emergency happens close to leeward coast.
Leeward coast in the southern Indian ocean means you've been blown to Antarctica, pretty damn near. It's about as desolate as any stretch of ocean can get in terms of paucity of islands, the southern Indian and the extreme southeastern Pacific. That said, I know why she took that route despite the weather dangers in it--to avoid piracy which is common against small boats not merely from Somalia but also Sri Lanka and Indonesia. It is true that she might have been running very low on fuel but we don't have any information on that at the moment, which means I should probably stop speculating, but anyway, there's nothing stopping a world sail from being counted in the yachting community (even if not by some official record body, but she already was not getting into one of those) if you stop to victualate and refuel, and she'd already stopped for engine repairs. Keeping steering way in the storm was worth running down fuel for when Kerguelen was that close and the French geographic survey station would have plenty of diesel on hand.

There's a picture of the Club Mediterranée.
What, no love for The Maltese Falcon?

They seem entirely too long, narrow, and low to the water for such tall masts. I'd rather be on a more traditionally styled "modern" sailing ship, like the Eagle.

Good luck running the Eagle with a crew of less than a hundred...

WMA, while the Maltese Falcon can be operated by one person, she normally carries a crew of 18, so though she was the 289-footer I had originally thought of, I don't quite count her as a single-hander like the CM which was specifically designed to meet international single-hand sailing competition rules.

The Eagle isn't really modern either though.

Why not? It's no older than most other tall ships in service today.
