McCarthyism is the Political Correct word to replace Naziism.

E Pluribus Unum = One from Many.

BTW, I find the politically immature jibe particularly ironic from a guy whose country still relies largely on others for defense.

No, McCarthyism is not Nazism, not even close. Not even in the same universe as close.

"Out of the Many, One"

Pluribus = many, in ablative since it's a prepositional phrase, and unum = one, accusative(direct object), and 'E' = 'out', the preposition.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I was under the impression that NZ didn't heavily invest in its own defense.

Compared to America? no we dont spend 3% of GDP on defence, more like one and a bit %.
Now where is that evidence that we rely on others for our defence?

I read it somewhere, but I've done some research and it turns out I was misinformed. I apologize.

Don't expect any of those Congress members who voted for it to be re-elected. And worse is the next Congress will repeal it.

McCarthyism is a brand of nationalism, even ultranationalism. Nationalism is what bred Fascism, Fascism is what bred Nazism. All steps along an unholy chain.

McCarthyism is the mentality that you must be a traitor if you disagree with the state, and you should be dealt with accordingly. It is a horrifying mentality, and the only difference between a benign McCarthyist and a Nazi is the brutality with which they think you should be "dealt with accordingly".

Some might say that it is "McCarthyist" for people to protest the Dixie Chicks for their announcement of an unpopular sentiment... but in truth I think it is just the give and take of public discourse. There are many others who applauded or stood up for the DC's and no one, not the DC's or their supporters, were hauled before a kangaroo-court of "Un-American activities" investigations.

If you make an unpopular statement, you have to be prepared to face some critique for that.

On the other hand, there is the Politically Correct quasi-McCarthyism that has permeated society at many levels-- the young child who was expelled from school (I think he was maybe 8 years old?) for kissing a female classmate on the cheek... sexual harassment, they actually declared it? It was a couple years ago...

I wonder-- how come when someone who is anti-Bush/US/war makes a loud public protest (as is their right) all is well and good, until someone with a different opinion DARES to disagree with them, and present their own point of view-- then suddenly the pro-Bush/US/war person is an "intolerant Nazi" trying to "crush 1st Amendment Rights". The 1st Amendment does not just protect liberal speech. It means both sides get to bark at each other equally.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Very true, even though it's an oversimplification to assume (even though it tends to be sadly true in American political discourse) that everything boils down to just two distinct "sides".

Barking at people over an argument is fine. Attempting to organize punitive ACTION over an argument is definitely walking that fine line between public discourse and McCarthyist coercion, and perhaps stepping right over it. And criminalizing association with undesirable political movements is outright fascism. The question is what we are dealing with here, and in what proportions.

That's one slippery slope to assume that McCarthyism will lead down to Nazism.

Oh wow, you guys are right! We need a federal mandate commanding every citizen to buy a Dixie Chicks album, otherwise it's McCarthyism.

Stupid citizenry, thinking it has the right not to patronize entities it decides it doesn't care for.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster
