Since those are the standard terms of contract for personal injury lawyers, and since Edwards was a good one, I would be VERY surprised if he had never done something like this. Also, considering the fact that he's a millionaire several times over, and his largest payout ever was "only" about $15 million, I think there's some pretty good evidence that he's claimed the sorts of HUGE lawyer fees that his colleagues get.
If not, then HE isnt a scumbag. Also, while it is prety shity, the fack remains they still get some restitution for the families.
True, but it strikes me as being ridiculously dishonest that they beg the judge for money for their clients, and then take half of it. The thing is: it COULD be a reasonable profession. I can see lawyers working on commissions, particularly when their clients are impoverished and otherwise couldn't afford a lawyer, but they're STILL scumbags for taking such a huge proportion of their clients' winnings--let's face it, there are more honorable forms of lawyers out there.
Scumbags? Maybe, maybe not. Unfair, yes certainly, but i'm not defending that mind you. I'm saying i dont think Edwards counts as a scumbag, in fact i'm prety sure he doesnt. I dont know, but he seems like a nice guy in public. Who knows, he might be some insane frothing leather freak at home...
People can be scumbags who seem nie. In fact, most scumbags WANT to appear like nice people, since it gives them more opportunities.

Master Ossus--

Yeah well, i admit you're probably right, but still he couldnt be that much worse than our current VP, so win loose or draw i'm voting for Kerry and Edwards.

I'm not trying to compare him to anyone in particular, but to a general standard which I would consider to be "morally acceptable." I'm sure there are people in politics that have done things a thousand times worse than taking peoples' money (aka. their lives).

Not that that will have much of an effect on the election, but at least he's charismatic. Now if some of that charisma rub off a little bit on Kerry, we'd be set.
Hell, I'd think that if Edwards could somehow sneak a large enough mirror onto the debate stage and show on national TV that Dick Cheney doesn't cast a reflection, that would finish him off right there. 8)

I predict that the right will use the word "winnings" a lot in reference to how John Edwards earned his money. Why? Because it makes it sound fortuitous and suspect, like he won his money in the lottery, rather than earning it by being a successful trial attorney. A job which requires patience, persuasiveness, charisma, intelligence and attention to details. Sounds actually rather like characteristics one would highly desire in a man whose job is to stand a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I don't know. Edwards and his kin would easily suck the lifeblood out of my family, since my dad's an anesthesiologist and those malpractice lawyers prey on his profession like fat kids on chocolate cake. Bush and his kin would suck the soul out of my family. I'm kinda stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea...
Think about it this way: if you help put Edwards into the White House, that's one less malpractice lawyer on the streets

Well, winnings is an acceptable term to use describe the money trial lawyers get when they win a case.

Yes, but that does not mean it has no undesirable connotations.

Really? I guess they didn't work for it. Stay up late at night, not see their families or travel for 2-3 months away from where they live to work in a high pressure environment with no breaks for mental health and depressurizing. Yep, sure feels like I "won" my money.

Quit whining, people describe money won in sports competitions and the like as winnings also, but does anyone think they don't work for their money, either? This entire argument rests on the idea that the general public is too stupid to understand what trial lawyer "winnings" are.

Dammit with actors running for political office, and so many of the pols having the same name as the actors/singers (remember when Paul Simon was running for President back in 1988, (the nerdy politician not princess leia's ex-husband/folk singer)
