Explosion At Turkish-Iran Gas Pipeline

ANKARA (Thomson Financial) - An explosion last night rocked a gas pipeline in the northeast of Turkey that supplies the country with gas from Iran, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The explosion took place near the town of Dogubeyazit in the province of Agri, which borders Iran. It caused a fire that burned itself out out some 20 minutes later, Atay Uslu, an assistant to the deputy police chief of Dogubeyazit, told the news agency.

'An inquiry is underway. We think it could emerge the explosion was caused by a technical fault,' said Uslu, adding repair work to the pipeline had started.

He was unable to specify when deliveries of gas would resume.

Turkey imports Iranian gas for domestic consumption via the pipeline, which links the town of Tabriz, in northwest Iran, to Ankara.

MOSCOW (Thomson Financial) - Russian state-controlled gas giant Gazprom said it had increased supply to Turkey by 50 pct after a pipeline explosion halted Iran's gas flow into the country.

'Today, in accordance with a demand from the Turkish side, Gazprom has increased the volume of its gas exports to Turkey from 20 to 30 mln cubic metres per day,' Gazprom said in a statement.

Iran suspended the flow of gas into Turkey after an explosion Sunday near Dogubayazit town in Agri province, some 17 kilometres (ten miles) from the Iranian border. The cause of the explosion was still unclear.

Turkey is the third biggest importer of Russian gas by volume, which was 19.9 bln cubic metres in 2006, according to Gazprom.

Because tragedies come in threes, well okay, twos for now. This reminds me of a British novel out this year where Peak Oil happens as the result of global terrorism on numerous oil producers all at once. Fun times.

Well...there's always the endless leaking & exploding pipelines in Nigeria so you could just add that in and count it as three for the day.

I actually see that being a realistic scenario now, what with the fun of Iraq and the endless rumours of something afoot regarding Iran. It's almost like they want to do something with Iran before the term is up after people see more oil woes.

And as Iraq has shown us, invading an oil-producing country INSTANTLY provides returns in terms of resources.

It's all very similar to Risk, which I believe is what our Administration is using at the moment. "We get 6 more armies if we take out Pakistan next!"
