Let's ban Fahrenheit 451

Post by VF5SS »

Here is a news report about a small town looking to ban the book. Thick irony aside, some of the complaints against the book are quite laughable. "Talking about our firemen" and "being drunk" seem to be perfectly in line with a typical high school setting. Somewhere, Montag weeps for all of us.

These are the times when line by line offenses in the bible need to be circulated. Wasn't Noah a drunk?

Did they actually bother to read the book, with its call for people to read something other than comic books and think for themselves, and a protest against censorship? Sounds like they're trying to change the "United States of America" to "Fascists United In Hypocrisy."
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Noah got drunk and naked, and his son went in and 'covered his nakedness'.

Lot's daughters got him drunk after Sodom and Gamorrah, then slept with him to have children.

Most people advocating book banning haven't read the book in question. Hell most can barely read at all. A lot of this nonsense is due to the classic herd mentality.

This is self-evidently stupid for all sane people, but spare a thought for me, an English literature student.

They could hardly have picked a more ironically appropriate book to attack, not for its themes of obvious censorship, but for censorship seen as necessary for pandering to the lowest common denominator and to social stability.

Conroe's up north of here, not that far from Houston. When you start getting into that area it starts being rural more than suburban or urban.

Shit like this makes me glad that I live within the boundaries of a big city. At least here it's not as horse fucking crazy. Well, not quite anyways. This is Texas after all.

The fact that they're even taking this redneck hick seriously at all is hilarious. Isn't this video a bit old though? I could've sworn the story was posted before, and the date stamp on the video says June.

Wasn't the moral of the story that as long as people remembered the Bible, then all the other lost information didn't matter?

Not even close. The story is not religious at all. Burning the Bible is depicted as a bad thing for the same reason burning any other book is a bad thing. In the story it's treated as a highly influential, and thus culturally important work. Which is precisely what it is in real life.

"No reason it was writ..." - Idiot father

That right there should invalidate his opinion on literary matters. If you butcher the English language like that you have no right to be disparaging an important piece of literature.

And if this idiot wants to protect his daughter from things in the real world he'd best go off and live among the Amish.
