I go to her school, by the way... She hardly needs extra time to smoke, she spends like 45 minutes outside before school begins anyway.

First, to quote the article itself.

A YEAR 10 student has been given permission to take cigarette breaks at school because her doctor says she is clinically addicted to nicotine.

Tara Lewis, 16, who smokes as much as a packet a day, is allowed to smoke between classes to relieve the "stress" of her studies.

Canberra's Stromlo High School has granted the concession to the teenager despite the ACT Government boasting of plans to tighten laws to stop underage smoking.

It is also illegal to supply cigarettes to under 18s.

The Government has for years allowed smoking for year 11 and 12 students at five colleges and will introduce a total ban only from next year.

Tara said that it was a "massive" relief to be able to smoke at school.

"As soon as I've got a cigarette in my hand, I'm calmer," she said.

Stromlo High School gave her permission for "smoko" breaks following advice from her mother Patrece and her family doctor.

"We were worried she wasn't going to finish year 10 if she couldn't smoke," Ms Lewis, 35, said.

Anti-smoking campaigner Anne Jones said the school was reckless in facilitating Tara's addiction.

Easy. The doctor believes that the criminalization of addictions is wrong, and, therefore, punishing this girl would be the wrong thing to do.

Even if there is some truth in that, I don't see how it gives her a free pass to smoke when the school clearly has rules against it. You know what bothers me more though? The fact that this crackhead mother is in a picture with her, smoking away. That whore looking daughter may be older, but does the mom have any other kids? Clearly, she has no problem supporting her kids' smoking habits.

The fact that the mother would actually allow her cow of a daughter to quit school because she can't smoke there makes her inelligable to procreate.

Don't you have nicotine patches down there? If he's concerned about the stress of her addiction, there should be far better and less carcinogenic us means of treating it.

It's funny though; simpleton black and white thinkers come in two forms. This is really nothing different from the doctors who tell pregnant women not to give up smoking, because it might stress them. It's just more amusing here because it sets a massive double-standard and she isn't even legally old enough to smoke in any case.

Yeah we do have patches, having prescribed a few myself. I would have thought they try that first, then if that fails we can prescribe zyban. But I belief varinicicline will be available in Australia sometime in December, which is supposedly better than Zyban for smoking cessation.
