"No sex on the plane!" - Singapore Airlines

Post by Darth Wong »

There may be private suites with double beds aboard Singapore Airlines' new A380 superjumbo jets. But that doesn't mean the airline is about to let customers join the "mile-high club."

The airline — which is majority owned by the Singapore government — says it will ask passengers to refrain from sex in its first-class suites, which are home to the world's first airborne full-sized beds.

Singapore Airlines' suites in its Airbus A380 superjumbo include a first-class double bed with door. Singapore Airlines' suites in its Airbus A380 superjumbo include a first-class double bed with door.

"All we ask of customers, wherever they are on our aircraft, is to observe standards that don't cause offence to other customers and crew,'' the airline told Reuters in a statement.

Come on, if you're going to offer private first-class suites on your giant new Airbus A380 plane with double-beds, champagne, and roses, what the fuck do you expect couples to do in there? Read the Wall Street Journal?

It's Singapore. They have that stupid 377a code that outlaws a whole bunch of harmless sex acts...

It should be interesting to see if they actually try and enforce that policy.

Obligatory pumping for "Asian Values" to pacify crusty old wretches in the community.

This is the same SIA that made the softcore porn "Singapore Girl" ad exclusively for Western markets when they were a new airline, so I'm pretty sure they know what's going on in the cabins. Just hypocrisy as usual, par for the course.

Also, in before painrack's "What do you expect them to do?".

Is a passenger aircraft a mobile chunk of sovereign territory, in the way that a ship is? Do Singapore's laws necessarily apply, just because Singapore owns the aircraft...?

Anyway, screw 'em. If I have a warm bed, and a warm bed-mate, what happens behind a locked cabin door is none of their damn business.

And it would sure be more comfortable than joining the club, the way we did, in the more-usual part of the plane...

Some idiot for a Law prof who is a Nominated Member of Parliament just gave a speech that is practically of the same vein as what the Nazis were saying about the Jews.

Quite frankly, the bigotry is despicable.

Quite frankly, the nation ought to be publicly shamed for this bloody bigotry. "Asian values"? Pah! More like excuses a bloody dictator would use to justify something that is innately stupid.

I thought the beds looked awfully nice and if you are going to be on one of those long assed multi-hour flights across the Pacific there's only so much sleeping you can do. :)

The only thing is I'm not entirely sold on the privacy of the "rooms" both for sound and viewing.

Now I'm waiting for some airline to come out and market theselves the complete opposite, where it's OK to bone away on their flights. Just don't try to nail the flight crew since they've got a job to do. :D

Even if not, the planes are private property, Singapore Airlines can set whatever codes of behaviour it wants.

Sure, but does it have the force of Singaporean law?

No, but it doesn't need to, they can simply eject passengers from the plane at, say, a stopover, or even divert to remove them, as occasionally happens to drunk people.

Codes of acceptable behaviour can be laid down as conditions of purchasing a ticket to fly with Singapore Airlines.[/quote]

Chances are most of the people who can afford those suites can't get it up without Viagra, so they probably will be reading the WSJ.

Well as the article states, those ‘private suits’ aren’t even proper rooms, let alone soundproofed. Odds are they designed them that way because it avoids any pressurization and air calculation problems. Stupid decision, but I'm not going to blame the airline for trying to head off complaints.

Classical Japan had a whole set of courtesy rules for screwing in houses with paper privacy-walls (hands over mouths, etc).

If you can be quiet, visual screening is really all you need.

A plane is a noisy environment, with the constant vibration of the engines reverberating in your ear. It's not a rock concert, but it's not a library either. There's a constant low-level noise, and this elevated noise floor means that you could probably make a normal amount of noise in that bed without anyone hearing, even though it's not totally soundproofed. It wouldn't block out actual screaming, but the kind of noises that a normal discreet couple makes would probably not be discernible by other passengers. Simply telling people to be quiet should be enough, I should think. But as others have pointed out, Singapore has a rather sexually conservative outlook.

One of the selling points of the 380 is that it's supposed to be much quieter than other planes. An articles I read said the lack of engine noise and the lack of soundproofing would make it very likely to be overheard by the other passengers.

I thought this was a bit of hype, but from the blog of the Boeing pres:
In stories about the A380 passenger experience, we read that even seated by a window, you could hear conversations on the other side of the airplane, or even several rows away. In some reports, when passengers mentioned that this might be a bit disconcerting, they were told that one might have to "get used to" eavesdropping on an airplane. I don’t know about you, but my personal experience is that if you can’t sleep because you can hear lots of conversations, or other sounds, you’re going to be more fatigued when you arrive.

You’d probably agree that the most disturbing background noises are the random ones - talking, coughing, lavatory doors closing. How disturbed you are during a flight is a function of the degree to which the random noises rise above the background noise.

We think the difference between “perceived” quiet on different jetliners is due to the balance of background - or white noise - and ambient noise.

Think of this as a trade-off between the level of background noise that might drown out desired noises (a flight attendant being able to hear the passenger’s drink order) versus undesired noises (one passenger being able to hear every other passenger’s drink order).

That’s why some “white noise” can be desirable on an airplane, and even soothing (the difference, say, between the sound of a power saw in the background, or of a babbling brook).

So, listen, maybe passengers could “get used to” to eavesdropping on an airplane. But my guess is you’ll find it annoying.

Babbling brook? Yes. Babbling passengers clear across the cabin? Maybe not.

I expect the reduced noise of next generation aircraft like the A380 and Boeing's "Dreamliner" will eventually result in a change in passenger speaking volume. Most people don't like to talk loudly when others can hear their private conversations, do they?

Actually I expect 100% the opposite reaction. Because perhaps 10% of people already talk loud as hell, another 75% are going to start talking louder too, because most people just naturally do that in the presence of loud talkers, and have no concisions control over it. Then the last 15% are going to go mad from the near yelling level of volume and hijack the plane into the ocean.

Passenger trains are considerably quieter than airlines and in my experience the passengers are almost deathly quiet.
