Detroit Mayor's Steamy Text Messages

Post by HemlockGrey »

For those of you who don't know, the mayor of Detroit, arguably the worst city in the Western world, is a guy in his mid-thirties named Kwame Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick is involved in all sorts of scandals, controversies and corruptions; he's not the black Richard Daley, but he's up there.

Recently the Detroit Free Press released excerpts from 14,000 text messages sent between Kilpatrick and his mistress. Both of them are married to other people and the attempt to cover up the affair resulted in the retaliatory termination of at least two police officers.

A Slate article regarding the text messsages, with excerpts and a link to the Detroit Free Press.

I highly recommend reading some of the text messages. It's very amusing.

Frankly from the sounds of it the two folk that go fired, at least one of them deserved it and it's likely the other did too. I like the notion that a person getting investigated by internal affairs decides to help himself by pointing at an affair.

What the fuck business is it of the fucking police or the fucking bodyguards who is shagging who anyway? If they were trying to use it as leverage then fuck them both they shouldnt have got a damn penny anyway. The bodyguard at least deserves getting sacked without any comeback. Oh god, they had teh sex...

Nelthrope probably deserved it, but the firing of Gary Brown was pretty shady.

I'd be very interested in what he tried to do with the knowledge of the affair...after all, how did they find out he knew?

Brown was investigating misconduct among Kilpatrick's security detail, and during the investigation he found out about Kilpatrick's affair and was fired, presumably to cover it up. Kilpatrick then lied about firing him, and when asked about the affair perjured himself.

So, essentially, Brown found politically damaging information in the course of an investigation and was axed to stop the investigation.

And, incidentally, it may very well be the police's business, since according to the text messages, Kwame used city tax money to finance some of his romatic getaways, much like Giuliani did with his mistress.

Were they originally investigating this holiday, or were they just being snoopy bastards?

Why the fuck is it any of our business if this guy is banging his mistress?

This has got me pretty pissed off actually ... I'd be fucking outraged if some of my private text messages/emails etc were publicised for the whole world to see. It sounds like the mayor in question is a corrupt cock, but I don't see why intimate messages should be released like this.

The text messages were released because by the Free Press because they proved 1) that Kwame perjured himself regarding the affair, 2) that he lied about firing Gary Brown, and 3) that he used taxpayer money to carry on the affair. Why shouldn't they be released?

You could make the argument that it's for the sole purpose of embarrassing the mayor. That in itself I couldn't give a fuck about. However, there's not much else gained by these becoming public and they also have the effect of causing real emotional and financial harm to innocent victims, such as the spouses and children of the mayor and his mistress.

The fact that he perjured himself, was stealing public funds, and may have abused his power to fire a police officer investigating him (which is also obstruction of justice unless it turns out the cop was dirty and needed to be sacked) has nothing to do with sexual text messages.

The fact that he was having the affair and with whom is pertinent information that should have been made public due to the alleged theft of city funds, but the intimate details of the relationship are not. It's designed purely to cause shame and embarrassment just like the Rethuglicans did to Clinton.

Damn damn damn damn.

Honestly I have no sympathy a mayor or any other public official who is anything less than a poster boy or girl scout. I don't even talk to my friends who do this shit to their "loved" ones.

That in mind, the mayor should be removed from office for lying under oath. Shit bag. :finger:

And ALWAYS it sucks when a black guy dose this. Thanks Kwame!!!
:banghead:

[rant]I didn't even have to look at the article to know that he was black dammit!! Why can't black folks just please, please, please just try and not commit to following stereotypes? Why? Is it really that hard to not be corrupt? To not be a philanderer? To simply be excellent? Dammit, I swear if anyone says to me that I speak well for a black person today their losing a tooth[/rant]

I live immediately north of Detroit. All of this started with a rumored party at the mayor's house, with strippers, which the mayor denied, but everybody and his uncle seems to know about. Seems some of his bodyguards got pick up for drunk driving afterwards and the tickets got fixed, in the investigation of that, all this other shit happened, including the stripper being murdered under mysterious circumstances. With the breaking of this story, a lawyer for the strippers kids is bringing suit against the mayor and subpoenaing everybody involved. As always it's not the act but the cover up. If he had said, "yeah, we had a prty and there were some strippers and my wife got upset" nobody in Detroit would give a rats ass.

If Kilpatrick's previous scandals haven't done that already, then I doubt this will.

The mayor should be ashamed of what he did, if it takes a public showing of his dirty laundry for him to get his act straight then good. The man needs to stop acting like a gangsta and actually run the damn city.

'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'
