Need historical examples

I need historical examples of western democratic powers that have elected mass murderers to the highest position of their government in the last 50 years. I'm not looking for "George Bush hurf durf!" or examples where, once in office the leader used the power to conduct mass murder. I need examples where It was well known and verified that the person elected gave the orders and/or had direct hand in mass murder of an innocent group. This ties in with some spoiler stuff. All I can think of is Ariel Sharon, are there any others?

Exactly 50 years? I believe the first Prime Minister of Israel was a former terrorist who bombed a hotel.

The first PM of ISrael was David Ben Gurion.

Heinrich Reinefarth (commonly known as Heinz Reinefarth, December 26, 1903-May 7, 1979) was a German official and military officer during and after World War II. During the Warsaw Uprising his troops committed numerous war atrocities. After the war Reinefarth became the mayor of the town of Westerland and member of the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag. He was never held responsible for war crimes.

I think that if that's not a "highest office", it's still a good example as it seems the people were completely oblivious to the fact that Heinz was a war criminal.
