What do you think of singapore's government?

Post by ray245 »

Thought it will be interesting to ask non-singaporeans about what do you think of singapore's government...given that almost every singapore related topic will always end up as a personal debate between painrack and Fingor Noldor.

So what is your opinion of the singapore government?

Oh, this is going to be good

Very efficient. I grant it that. Unable to trust its own people - what a ridiculous farce of an electorial system you have, with that group representation whatever thing. Malaysia has more opposition in parliament even at the height of Mahathir's iron grip then you people had!

ALso, sucks up to america. tsk tsk.

You really should put signs up about how all women on the street after 10PM Local time are either Shemales or Hookers, all women of good morals are either in bars or safely at home.

So says the sailor in me who found that damn jarring. Hookers I have certain pre-conceived notions about, and the fact that I won't get propositioned while in the fucking Singapore Apple store is one of them. But boy was I suprised.

That reminds me of a line I heard years ago. (Searches Google.) Now I know why.

Why is/was the economic growth rate a state secret (mentioned on page 2)?

I have come to a point where I don't give a shit about what happens in Singapore. The country can crash and burn and I will just migrate. What is only important is myself, my family and no one else.

Singapore sounds like a truly terrible place for people like me to live, if even a third of that article is true.

I'd take living in Singapore over living in Hsinchu, Taiwan, but that's not saying very much at all. At least Singapore has sidewalks.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

It's a choice of more democracy and less...

Though, I have a higher opinion of Taiwanese companies over our own. I'm not entirely sure how worker's rights are handled there however.

Grass is always greener on the other side - I'd take with heaps of salt anyone making sweeping statements for or against any place without the weight of actually having lived there for a appreciable amount of time.

Singers is good, unpleasant aspects to its government, to be sure, but the place is too important to us to let just any shit happen to it, which is why we put so much into defending the place and still would, truth be told.

And if you believe everything you read and hear, Malaysia is an Islamic theocracy. Doesn't make it true. Calling singapore a "facist hellhole" is an injustice to actual facist hellholes.

I think hell hole is a bit on the exaggeration, but calling the Government, whose leader has a rather interesting ideology when it comes to eugenics and what not, a fascist may or may not be close to the mark.

Isn't Malaysia having problem with corrupt Rajahs and other nobility?

Corrupt politicians and businessmen, yes. Corrupt royals, not so much (or even if so, they are doing it via proxy through said politicians/businessmen). Of course with 9 individual royal families I can't generalize, but in the aftermath of the recent general elections the royalty exerted what little influence it had left to refuse to reappoint state chief ministers known for being corrupt, and also in defusing tensions in states whose governments fell to the opposition. Some Sultans have also at least shown themselves to be willing to override petty and overzealous religious officers, at least insofar as other religion's interests are at stake (i.e. land permits for churches)

so I'd say it's clearly not as simple as declaring that the royalty is bad, rather at the moment they are playing the role they were meant to play - as a check on the government, especially since the judiciary has been neutered by past administrations and the legislature was until the recent elections dominated by the ruling coalition.

Perhaps so. I suppose we're somewhat on different wavelengths on this - I'm certainly a lot more tolerant of our governments autocratic tendencies.

To be fair when I was in Singapore, what I noticed was a terrific public transport system, clean streets and prices that made me feel poor (in Malaysia, I am comfortably middle class). I didn't exactly go out of my way to wander to an opposition HDB flat or consider that the old folks working is a symptom of a failing welfare state or whatever. I'm sure I missed many of Singapore's faults ;)
