May 13th: WV Primary

Post by LadyTevar »

Charleston Daily Mail wrote:Presidential Endorsement:

Of the Democrats, Hillary Clinton has the strongest policy background
WEST Virginia Democrats will express themselves Tuesday almost at the end of their party's bruising primary process. For many, the choice will be an uncomfortable one.

Both Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are from the liberal wing of the Democratic party. West Virginia Democrats tend to be more conservative.

Nevertheless, they must make a choice on Tuesday.

The Daily Mail, which is philosophically at odds with both contenders for the Democratic nomination, endorses Hillary Clinton. She is by far the more experienced of the Democratic candidates, and the one who has had to learn the most about West Virginia.

A Yale-educated lawyer, a former congressional staffer and former first lady of Arkansas, Hillary Clinton stumbled awkwardly onto the national stage. The Clintons, it was said, did not know the ways of Washington.

She was ridiculed for fashion choices at her husband's inaugural in 1992. She was excoriated for trying to bypass Congress and make health care policy herself.

But Hillary's history is that she keeps going, as she has during this primary campaign.

This trait has produced a broad, deep background in policy. She has been an activist for children, migrant laborers, civil rights, higher standards in education, the Children's Health Insurance Program and more.

She won a U.S. Senate seat in New York in 2000 and was re-elected by a larger margin in 2006. No one questions her readiness for Washington any more.

Now Hillary would be president, and Bill would be not baking the cookies or pouring the tea. Some Americans can't countenance the prospect of another Clinton co-presidency.

Either Democrat will have a tough time this fall against Republican John McCain, whose service, policy experience and bipartisan accomplishments trump Hillary's.

Of the Democrats, though, Hillary would be the stronger candidate.
Bolding mine. The DailyMail is the Right-Wing Conservative Republi-tard evening newspaper that hits 80% of the state. That they want Clinton is a good reason NOT to vote for her. They also had this to say earlier this week:
Charleston Daily Mail wrote:Another recent poll, commissioned by TSG Consulting, shows that 63 percent of likely voters prefer Clinton as the nominee. Twenty-three percent favor Obama.
HOWEVER, on the ClintonforWV website, dozens of questions and complaints have been posted about how Obama signs and support are everywhere (especially Charleston's East End and West Side, large black neighborhoods), while the Clinton Campaign headquarters was not returning calls or answering requests for help up until this past week.

On the other hand, I have spoken to both a co-worker and My Own Mother, who have been swayed not to vote for Obama because their CHURCH PASTORS are sayng he's the Anti-Christ come to rule us all.

I really thought my mom was smarter than that, but she is 72yrs old, and grew up in a town where the blacks were segegrated not only by schools, but by churchs and the very holler they lived up. Even when I was growing up, only 'blacks and white trash' lived in certain hollers, and a white woman with a black baby was scorned by the older folks.

Race and Religious Insanity will give Clinton this state

Start going to church with them and tape the sermons.
If the preacher starts condemning Obama from the pulpit, take your recordings and file complaints with the IRS about the church abusing its tax exempt status to engage in politicking.

Nothing will probably come of it, but you might put a good scare into the bastard when the IRS starts asking him questions.

Nobody is paying attention to the West Virginia primary. It's a foregone conclusion Clinton will win, and it's now an equally foregone conclusion Obama will be the nominee. As far as the media reaction, I don't think WV will even be front page news.

Not happening this time, I'm afraid. If it did, though, my guess is that they'd dismiss it as a red state.

I should have run "pick the Clinton excuse" pools earlier in the primaries.

Obama netting a win in WV is next to impossible, if there is any state that will remain red it's going to be WV. For fuck sake, some polls putting him at getting 22% in West Virgina. Twenty-fucking two percent. Your talking McCain VS Ron Paul numbers here.

Yeah, probably not. But it would be funny to watch her meltdown if somehow, someway, the impossible did happen after all. I'd pay money to see that.

TODAY: Election running smoothly in Kanawha, Putnam

With the exception of one location, polling places in Kanawha and Putnam counties opened without delays this morning and ran smoothly in the early hours.

Because of a supply worker arriving late, one Sissonville location opened behind schedule, said Vera McCormick, Kanawha County Clerk.

"Some of the machines in other locations didn't start up right away, but that didn't stop us from voting," McCormick said.

Kanawha County has already tallied 7,000 votes cast in early ballots, McCormick said. Details on the size of the turnout for today's primary election were not yet available, but McCormick said she expects one for the history books.

"We expect to have people waiting in line," she said. "We're a swing state and important when it comes to this election. We're all ready to go."

No delays were reported for Putnam County polling locations, said Brian Wood, Putnam County clerk.

Putnam County has counted about 2,200 votes cast during the early period, Wood said. In the still contested primary, there has been light to average turnout reported this morning with things seeming to run smoothly.

"Obviously, we're going to have hurdles and little questions from poll workers, but we haven't had any major problems," Wood said.

A record 76,519 West Virginians cast early ballots in the primary during the early voting period that ran from April 23 to May 10, according Secretary of State Betty Ireland's office. The previous record, set in 2004, was 27,226.

More than 70 percent of those early ballots were cast by Democrats in the highly contested Democratic primary between senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
There was a line when I went to vote, and many people in this nice middle-to-low-upper class white neighborhood were talking Obama. One fiesty senior citizen had to be asked to remove the Obama For President pins from her jacket before entering the polling precinct.

Now. Think about that a second.

Little. Fiesty. 60+ Female. Voting Obama.

 I think this race might be as surprising as Illinois.

HILLARY: I WON THE STUPID, POOR, HICK, RACIST VOTE IN A STATE FULL OF STUPID, POOR, HICK, RACISTS! I SHOULD BE PRESIDENT NOW!
Clinton is projected winner in W.Va., NBC says
Obama loses by wide margin, but adds to his superdelegate lead

updated 14 minutes ago

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was projected to win the West Virginia primary Tuesday, NBC News said, beating Sen. Barack Obama by a wide margin even as her rival edged closer to the Democratic presidential nomination by picking up more superdelegates.

The loss did not threaten Obama's lead in the race for the nomination. He conceded defeat in advance in the state, looking ahead to the Oregon primary later in the month and the campaign against John McCain.

"This is our chance to build a new majority of Democrats and independents and Republicans who know that four more years of George Bush just won't do," he said at a campaign appearance in Missouri, which looms as a battleground state in the fall.

"This is our moment to turn the page on the divisions and distractions that pass for politics in Washington," added the man seeking to become the fist black presidential nominee of a major party.

Early results from West Virginia exit polls showed race, education, Barack Obama's former pastor and a plan for a summertime suspension of federal gas taxes all gave Clinton a huge advantage in the state's presidential primary.

Three-fourths of whites without college degrees were backing Clinton. They've favored the former first lady all year and were crucial Tuesday because they were nearly two-thirds of the state's voters.

Most also said Obama shares the views of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor, and favored the gas tax plan that Clinton supports and Obama opposes. Big majorities of both groups backed Clinton. Clinton's aides contended that her strength with blue-collar voters — already demonstrated in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana — made her the more electable candidate in the fall.

Interviews with West Virginians leaving their polling places showed an overwhelmingly white electorate composed of the kinds of voters who favored Clinton in past primaries. Nearly a quarter were 60 or older, and a similar number had no education beyond high school. More than half were in families with incomes of $50,000 or less.

Even before the polls closed, spokesman Mo Elleithee said the primary showed voters "don't want to be told that this thing is over. The people of West Virginia rejected the rush to call this thing over. They sent a very clear message tonight that Hillary Clinton is the best person to take on John McCain in the fall."

West Virginia had 28 delegates at stake, to be awarded proportionally according to the popular vote.

With the polls still open, Obama had 1,874 delegates, to 1,702 for Clinton, according to the NBC News count, out of 2,025 needed to clinch the nomination at the party convention in Denver this summer.

NBC's national delegate count currently stands at 1,426 for Clinton and 1,591 for Obama. NBC’s estimated superdelegate count stands at 276 for Clinton and 283 for Obama.

[There are differences in how news organizations count delegates, how they award superdelegates, how they account for states that have held caucuses but have not yet chosen their delegates, and how they project the apportionment of delegates within Congressional districts where the vote was close. The Associated Press and NBC news conduct separate delegate counts.]

The delegate tally aside, the former first lady struggled to overcome an emerging Democratic consensus that Obama effectively wrapped up the nomination last week with a victory in the North Carolina primary and a narrow loss in Indiana.

He picked up four superdelegates during the day, including Roy Romer, former Democratic Party chairman.

"This race, I believe, is over," Romer told reporters on a conference call. He said only Clinton can decide when to withdraw, but he added: "There is a time we need to end it and direct ourselves to the general election. I think that time is now."

Clinton and Obama briefly shook hands on the Senate floor Tuesday after interrupting their campaigns for a few hours to vote on energy-related bills.

In the days since, close to 30 superdelegates have swung behind Obama, evidence that party officials are beginning to coalesce around the first-term Illinois senator who is seeking to become the first black to win a major party presidential nomination. Three of his new supporters formerly backed Clinton, who surrendered her lead in superdelegates late last week for the first time since the campaign began.

In his appearance in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Obama sketched the case against McCain. "For two decades, he has supported policies that have shifted the burden onto working people. And his only answer to the problems created by George Bush's policies is to give them another four years to fail," he said.

The former first lady spent parts of several days campaigning in West Virginia in search of victory.

She refrained from criticizing Obama directly, but had a cautionary word nonetheless for party leaders who seemed eager to pivot to the fall campaign. "I keep telling people, no Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia," she said at Tudor's Biscuit World in the state's capital city.

Obama was in the state on Monday, but it was clear he was looking beyond the primary.

He said several days ago he expected Clinton to win by significant margins in West Virginia and then in Kentucky, which holds its primary next week. And on Monday, he tried to set the bar of expectations exceedingly low for himself, suggesting that anything above 20 percent would constitute a good showing in West Virginia.

He devoted more time to Oregon, which also holds a primary next week, and announced plans to campaign in several other states that loom as battlegrounds in the fall against McCain.

Among them are Florida and Michigan, two states that held early primaries in defiance of national Democratic Party rules. The two combined have 44 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, and Obama has not yet campaigned in either.

Obama also broke from his usual practice by wearing a flag pin on his suit jacket. He told several thousand people at the Charleston Civic Center that patriotism means more than saluting flags and holding parades.

We're not stupid, but we don't have many college educated folks. We are poor, with most WVians with college educations leaving the state for work. Racist? Considering there's still whole counties that are 99% white, with towns that have never seen a 'person of color' outside a TV set? Yeah. You can call that Racist. Hick? That label seems to go with 'Poor' and 'Uneducated' no matter what state it is.

Clinton wins this battle, but one look at the average Clinton voter (low-income, uneducated, poor, elderly) should be a warning, not a victory. Those who can think, those who have that college education, who are the 'cream' of the crop, are my neighbors in Charleston, black and white, who've got the town quilted with Obama signs, and who've bolstered that 76thousand + early voting spree.

WV may go to Clinton... but it's not going to be the landslide she's hoping for. She's still lost the War.

Its hilarious to me that Obama won more superdelegates in the past week than she could pick up even if she won 100% of the WV delegates.

It is rather ironic, and that's what the media's focusing on: that the Obama train is picking up momentum.

So basically, in her "crushing" win over Barack Obama, Hillary nets the rich prize of... 15 delegates.

Truly, a comeback of epic proportions.

If you consider Obama's own 7 delegates, it's really more like a prize of 9 delegates. (CNN has Shillary listed at 16 delegates).

It's 28 total for the primary, so the 15-16 number for her holds. In any case, it's pitiful.

According to polls with 84% it stands as follows

Clinton, Hillary 206,452 67% 19 Delegates
Obama, Barack 80,457 26% 9 Delegates
TOTAL VOTES 286,909

Not sure why it does not add up to 100% unless people are voting for Gravel.
