Isolated Tribe in Amazon Found

Post by Straha »

Linka wrote:
One of South America's few remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed on the border between Brazil and Peru.

The Brazilian government says it took the images to prove the tribe exists and help protect its land.

The pictures, taken from an aeroplane, show red-painted tribe members brandishing bows and arrows.

More than half the world's 100 uncontacted tribes live in Brazil or Peru, Survival International says.

Stephen Corry, the director of the group - which supports tribal people around the world - said such tribes would "soon be made extinct" if their land was not protected.

'Monumental crime'

Survival International says that although this particular group is increasing in number, others in the area are at risk from illegal logging.

Uncontacted tribe near Brazil-Peru border

What do the pictures tell us?
In pictures: Brazil tribe

The photos were taken during several flights over one of the most remote parts of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil's Acre region.

They show tribe members outside thatched huts, surrounded by the dense jungle, pointing bows and arrows up at the camera.

"We did the overflight to show their houses, to show they are there, to show they exist," the group quoted Jose Carlos dos Reis Meirelles Junior, an official in the Brazilian government's Indian affairs department, as saying.

"This is very important because there are some who doubt their existence."

He described the threats to such tribes and their land as "a monumental crime against the natural world" and "further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the 'civilised' ones, treat the world".

Disease is also a risk, as members of tribal groups that have been contacted in the past have died of illnesses that they have no defence against, ranging from chicken pox to the common cold.
This is so cool.

A picture taken by the plane. Totally awesome.

Understatement of the day there. That is kind of awesome, though.

TIM will move in and rape the land and evict them.

Airplane according to my local newspaper. It also wrote that they fired at the airplane so my guess is they didn't liked it to much.

Finally, an opportunity to put unmanned aerial drones to nonmilitary use.

How do you initiate contact when contact in the past has resulted in them dying off from otherwise common diseases their immune systems had no defense against, though?

They're a tiny population which has a very old method of survival going for them. Who's to say that our methods for sanitation (they have a very large amount of empty forest to go shit in as needed) medicine (if they are like a lot of forest tribes, they have developed their own pharmacopeia, from the forest around them) agriculture (what does a small hunter-gatherer population need agriculture for, if they live in a forest naturally full of food plants and animals?) and...communication? I think those upraised bows are communicating something to us very clearly, if only we choose to pay attention...

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

These would be the same diseases we now have cures for, correct? Ok, just making sure we are on the same page. You are right, we should totally not give them the option of joining the rest of the modern world because a lot of people died when exposed to diseases they had no resistance to and we had no cure for. The fact that we have a cure now is irrelevant.

We don't have cures for a lot of those diseases; we have inoculation.

"Cure" for a lot of those illnesses, just means supportive therapy.

That reddish body paint is really bright. At first, I thought the red had been enhanced in the labeled picture at top.

It's also interesting that both the men and the woman in that first picture seem to be wearing a similar belt or bright-colored object around their waist. It's not clear that they all have such a belt.

Care with to try again without the strawmen? I never said about not making contact with them at all, but making contact when its proven fatal in the past in a way that doesn't result in making the survivors even more xenophobic isn't exactly easy.

Because we are dependent on natural immunities to protect us, instead of having vaccines, sterile practices, cures, and treatments. Modern medicine is clearly no different from what we did when the tribe shaman prayed to the fire gods to heal us. Oh, wait. I'm sorry, that is a strawman. I see below that you argue that their stone-age level of medicine is not at the same level as modern science, it is superior. My mistake.
This is the most insipid bullshit I have seen here in a long time. By all means show me how stone age living provides clean water, or that clean water is not in high demand at any level of society. That their own medicine is superior is beyond even defending, it is the same bullshit behind the idea that holistic medicine is superior to science. Agriculture lets them have food all the time rather then being dependent on successful hunts and the whims fo the seasons. Your communication example just goes beyond retarded and into "kill yourself you ignorant slut" range.

Does it occur to you at all that the entirety of human existance consists of us working our assess off to get away from the way of life you now look back upon fondly? That given the option of joining the rest of us or staying the way they are, some of them might choose to not be living on the edge of death all the damn time?

Besides the fact that coming into contact with common illnesses that are all but eliminated in the modern world is enough to kill them due to their immune systems having no defense?

Personally, I don't know. When the subject of spreading modern civilization to these people come around I kind of think, "Meh, screw that. Why bother." A little bit more resource and manpower to help ourselves adapt to the coming crises would be better, and then there's the fact that these people are already well-suited to living off of the land, and aren't dependent on a vast surplus of resources that are quickly decreasing in quantity.

I don't really associate with many people's obsession with protecting these civilizations though.

Care to try addressing the actual point instead of proclaiming a sarcastic reiteration of my argument is a strawman?

Modern medicine has defeated most of the diseases that wiped out primitive groups in the past. As a result, the fears of disease are largely exaggerated now. We can vaccinate against most, cure some, or relieve the deadly symptoms of nearly all the rest.

Average life expectancy for their level of tech is in the mid 20s.
linka

If wikipedia is right then it may be lower, depending on where you would place these guys techwise.

Like how you completely blew off all the rest of my points though.

The idea that we need to go in, turn things upside down and drag them kicking and screaming into the modern era is some kind of neocolonial thinking where the white man's burden has become the first worlds burden. However, that is a far cry from making contact and letting them decide what they want to do.
