When you're poor, it can be hard to pay the bills. When you're rich, it's hard to keep track of all the bills that need paying. It's a lesson Cindy McCain learned the hard way when NEWSWEEK raised questions about an overdue property-tax bill on a La Jolla, Calif., property owned by a trust that she oversees. Mrs. McCain is a beer heiress with an estimated $100 million fortune and, along with her husband, she owns at least seven properties, including condos in California and Arizona.

San Diego County officials, it turns out, have been sending out tax notices on the La Jolla property, an oceanfront condo, for four years without receiving a response. County records show the bills, which were mailed to a Phoenix address associated with Mrs. McCain's trust, were returned by the post office. According to a McCain campaign aide, who requested anonymity when discussing a private matter, an elderly aunt of Mrs. McCain's lives in the condo, and the bank that manages the trust has not been receiving tax bills on the property. Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: "The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due."

Dan McAllister, treasurer- tax collector for San Diego County, said that about 3 percent of San Diego's approximately 1 million property owners default on their property taxes each year. The county assesses a 1.5 percent penalty for each month that goes by unpaid and puts houses up for sale after five years. "We do hear an awful lot of excuses for why people don't pay," McAllister said. "Under the law, the property owner is responsible for keeping the address current. We're only as good as the information we are given."
Given McCain's budget tomfoolery proposed, I'm not entirely surprised he and his wife can't properly arrange to have taxes paid on time.

Well, at least McCain wasn't lying about not understanding economics very well . . .

If they have so many properties, let alone the fact that this belonged to a trust she owns, with so many more, I can imagine this slipping through the cracks.
I can see this happening frankly, it's not that easy to keep track of so many properties. Why, my family forgot to pay the fruit greengrocer's bill....for a week :P .

Ah, to worry about such overpaid fees :P. Anyway,

So, it's media overhyping, although not a very good sign of economics from the management of a trust fund by a 100 million dollar hieress. Big surprise

The sad part is that certain elements in the media will find this story more interesting than McCain's positions and this will get more coverage than his energy plan.

If they have enough money to afford so many properties why can't they afford an accountant to properly manage them?

And the bleating sheep will hold this up as more evidence of the media's liberal bias and how they only go after McCain but don't point out all of Obama's faults, etc.

I guess he hired Hillary Clinton's accountant? :P.
At any rate, they are paying it off, although I wouldn't want my money in a fund that forgets to pay basic taxes on properties it owns. On the other hand, I wish that I (Or anyone else here for that matter) actually had a fund that owned even one property, so fuck orderly account keeping :P .

Shit, if the media went half as hard on McCain as they do Obama, Barack would be looking at a 50 state landslide.
Instead, most of McCain's gaffes, lies, flip flops, distortions and less than stellar commitment to family values (ask his first wife about McCain's fidelity) are largely ignored.
It's sad that I see more honest coverage of McCain from foreign media than I do from most US outlets.

You're still surprised to see foreign media giving more accurate, objective news than the US networks? Where have you been the past few decades?

I said 'sad', not 'surprised'. :P

This instantly makes McCain a walking joke. Surely a good political machine as well as standup comedians can keep hammering at the guy who can't pay his own bills being sold to us as the guy who can pay the country's bills or outwit terrorists.

McCain just screams "loser".

The sad fact is that this is how a lot of people will see it. This country goes out of its way like no other to apologize for its upper class. If McCain made $65,000/yr and forgot to pay real estate taxes on his house, everyone would call him an idiot. But since he and his pill-popping wife are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, that actually obviates responsibility for these kinds of "normal folk" concerns, apparently.
